Sam was the dog, but maybe Sam possesses the dog so he can go out and see through the dog's eyes. Did anyone notice the picture in his office of a collie-type of dog standing guard over a sleeping little blonde girl?

I like the show thus far but I haven't read or heard of the books so I'm not spoiled yet .

there was that scene where he was petting the dog and talking to it

Well,

he was petting a dog, that's for sure. If you go back and watch the scene again, he greets it as "my brother." Figure of speech? Or not? Hmmm...

So watching the most recent episode about how Bill became a vampire, am I to understand that to become a vampire, you have to get your blood drained by a vampire and then feed from one? That's it?

That's pretty much it!

The end of episode 5 was so sad. I knew it was coming because I've read the books but still...

I like the books a bit better than the series, but it's still entertaining to watch.

Im liking the series more and more as it goes along! I love the books and I love sookie in the books, but on the show....eh. But I am loving the character expansion and side stuff going on with tara and jason and sam and lafayette.

For those who've read the books:

Anyone notice that when Sookie found Dawn's body, JB wasn't out there in the yard trying to comfort her? He pops up several times over the course of the series, and since he ends up marrying Tara, you'd think he wouldn't be completely erased.

Yeah, I noticed that too. However, I don't think that JB is likely to marry this Tara. She's not even close to the same character as in the books.

Also, did you notice how the TV writers went out of their way to make it seem as if Sam had the opportunity and (possibly) the motive to kill Mrs. Stackhouse, while in the book it's absolutely clear that he didn't do it because he was with Sookie at the time.

I'm enjoying the series OK, but I'm just going to have to get over how much it deviates from the books. I feel like the deviations are only going to get bigger. How, for example, can Jason the V addict for the TV show go on to have the same fate as Jason from the books?

I have not read the books.

BUT, I did see an interview with the author. She does say that the TV series is *not* the books, that Alan Ball has made it his own creation. Therefore I will assume that he loves the characters and will use the events in the book loosely as a base for the show. I'm going to order the books today (can't find them locally) and go ahead and read them. There may be spoilers, yeah, but I love the series and the books are *always* better.

Can someone remind me how to unblock the spoilers? I want to read them!

Hold your mouse over it like your highlighting(click down and drag it across) something.

Right now I am reading the first book in the same author's Aurora Teagarden mysteries but the more I read about the books the more I want to pick them up. The thing is I'd have to buy them as none of the library's in my area carry them all.

Ah, the thread got bumped and it reminded me to add that I am SO impressed with the actor playing Tara's mother. She is absoluting *owning* that character! While the character itself is less than sympathetic (pathetic, if anything) she is doing an amazing job with it.

Had to go and check. Her name is Adina Porter.

Yeah, she's impressive. I hope Tara isn't driven to getting an exorcism. She's such a confident, kick-ass character. That would have to disappear for her to decide she needs an exorcism.

I am a HUGE True Blood fan! The characters have so much depth, and the actors are amazing!

What does everyone think of Sam? I don't think he is a werewolf or a shapeshifter. I think his connection to dogs is purely metaphorical. Did you see him running naked through the woods last episode? LOL Like a dog that gets loose and goes for a joy run. And then the guy in the boat saying, "Yeah, I done that." Like it's no big deal. OMG, I couldn't stop laughing.

Dogs are loyal, Sam is loyal to humankind. Though dogs usually have a master, and if Sam does, I haven't figured it out yet, except it's all of humankind. Sam is 'Man's Best Friend'. As far as I can tell, Sam's dog traits are only metaphorical.

LOTS of

I've got a jillion questions about the whole Sookie and Bill love scene & relationship thing. Can anyone who knows more about this either by watching the series longer and/or by reading the books do some "Vampire Love 101" for me?

1.) What is the significance of biting your human partner during sex for a vampire? I mean... he drank *a little* of her blood. So given he didn't feed on her completely, it seemed more symbolic than anything.

2.) What's the deal with the teeth coming out - it seemed his fangs came out automatically when he gets aroused... is this like an unwelcome erection or what?!

3.) When they were in the bathtub together, they were talking about her needing to take B12 to replenish her blood supply (that he drank) more quickly. But then were they talking about whether or not he'd bite her again... I thought he said he'd like to do it every time? Did I miss something? Did he really say he was going to drink her blood every day?

4.) Why does Bill sleep in the basement? I get that he can't be in sunlight, that part makes sense. But it seemed like there was some OTHER reason... like maybe it's sort of cave-like and creepy down there, and there was some other reason he didn't Sookie down there with him. What goes on during the day for a vampire? Is he just sleeping peacefully or is it something.... else?

My response to the questions. These aren't "factual" but my opinions on the show.

1) My interpretation is that the feeding during sex is a moment of sharing between the partners...much like sex is anyway. It's another level of sharing and nurturing your partner. But like some sex can be as well, not all of the feedings are beautiful, initimate or even wanted.

2) There was a bit about the fangs on the True Blood companion videos that can be viewed OnDemand. There was a conscious decision to make them something like switchblades. It does seem there is an element of control (or lack of it) to the vampires. I don't think it would be too far off to consider it similar to an erection. A body's response to a need...and those aren't always very controllable. Just put me near chocolate and watch my fangs come out.

3) My impression here was that, much like their newly discovered sexual partnership, they would be doing it a lot. Sex and feeding seem to be intertwined.

4) This is pure speculation here, but Bill's space definitely seems like a hiding spot. Per the previews from next week's episode, the other vamps slept in the more "traditional" (or clichéd) coffins. I'm presuming those weren't exactly hidden in the house but maybe just in the bedrooms where you would find any other bed. Bill's space seems more for protection by being hidden behind a false panel and a carpeted-over trapdoor.

Andy Bellefleur is starting to give me the twitches. Now, that scene in the boat with him and the other guy was an absolute hoot...but he's really creeping me out in general. And I *knew* the situation with the uncle was going to end up being molestation! I thought the way the scene was played was very descriptive of what many women and men have experienced with their sexual partners being unwittingly dragged into a past they had nothing to do with.
