Fraternal vs. Identical - Page 2

Ah, yes, Christy knows me too well!

mamaof5boys - Heck yes I'd get them tested if I were you, just to satisfy curiousity! Shoot, there was no doubt from ANYONE that mine were fraternal but I still got them tested (and yes, people mocked me for doing that but it was something *I* needed to do!). Anyway, MZ twins will have differences in look and often in weight. The earlier the egg split, the more differences you're likely to see. Doesn't make them any less MZ though! Test and please then let me know the results cuz I just LOVE this stuff! And I'm always right!

Our older three boys all look SO different! So it does surprise us that these two look so much alike. Has anyone else had this experience? Would you do a DNA test?
Identicals can have seperate sacs and seperate placentas, it all depends on when the egg was fertilized.

I'd get them tested, it's the only way to be sure.

It surprises me that our doctor was so definitive about them being fraternal. I did leave a message at the OB's office who delivered them asking to see if they did any testing on the placentas. For some reason I was thinking they said they automatically do that?

For those of you that have done the DNA test is it something that is covered by insurance? Do you know about how much the test costs?

I mentioned this to my mom and she doesn't think they look that much alike and "what difference does it make"! My DH couldn't tell them apart until just recently unless one of them had a scratch on their face- but that's probably just how observant he is!!

2+twins and quiltlovinlisa- I agree with you! I'm really curious to see what tests would show, although I'm guessing they're fraternal! I'll keep you posted if we hear anything!

mamaof5boys - the cost tends to be around $160-180 iirc.

mama5boys, we were told, oh I'm quite sure they're MZ.

They weren't. We did the DNA test with Affilitated Genetics. It was fast and easy. And IMO not too expensive considering what it was for... about $150 a year ago.

An advantage of knowing MZ or not is in case there are medical issues later you know whether they can donate to each other or if one gets an issue you can try to prevent in the other, etc.

I would think the twins themselves would like to know if they are MZ or DZ. I can't imagine not knowing with my own, but that's just me. I do know people who aren't sure

My guys are MZ and we knew that since we found out we were having twins, because they were monochorionic. It's pretty obvious, too, since they have the exact same features and look much different than our oldest.

My ID boys have somewhat different-shaped faces. One has a birthmark on his temple; the other has a birthmark on his tummy. Things to look at are the shape of their ears, and maybe theri fingerprints. While no two people have the same fingerprints, our boys are similar - whorls on the same fingers, in the same direction, for example.

Do they look identical to you guys?

Wow!! Cute boys!! I don't have time now but I'll post more later with a couple of pictures. I'm curious to see what you all think- I'll take a poll!

Yes, they do look MZ to me. I love seeing them growing up like that. It makes me all weepy (in a good way) thinking of my boys growing up together like that too.

yes, that!

I forgot to mention that my MZ boys have the EXACT same hair whorl at the front of their hairlines just to the left of center. It's pretty funny.

Okay- I am so curious to hear what you all think! Sometimes we look at them and they look so similar and other times so different. We are going to get them tested at their next appointment in Oct. Thanks for the feedback!

Umm, yeah. There is NO question on this one! Totally MZ!

To the OP: Depending on when the transfer was, it may have been too late for them to split into dichorionic MZ twins. It's my understanding that if you transfer blasts, and one splits, they'll at least be monochorionic, as they're 5 days along and just too far down the developmental course to split completely. Now, 3 day embryos, maybe not, but the odds would still overwhelmingly be that they're fraternal, but you'll only know for sure when they show up (or if they're boy/girl.)

FWIW, I had a 5d blast transfer, so am pretty darn sure that my di/di twins are DZ.

I would say yes, they sure look MZ to me. And adorable!

yes, they definitely look MZ to me!!! They are adorable.

Here is a photo of the hair whorls on my guys. It's not a great photo quality-wise (I have much better photos of them) but it shows the hair well. I just took it for that purpose

Mamaof5boys, they look MZ to me. And, as everyone else has said, adorable!

My girls have some mirroring, which I guess isn't surprising since they're momos and split so late . . . they have the same cowlick (hair whorl) on the back of their head, except one whorls clockwise and the other counterclockwise. They got their first tooth within 24 hours of each other . . . but on opposite sides of their mouths. Second tooth within 24 hours of each other, again on the opposite side. I'm really curious to see if they end up being one right handed and the other left!
