Thanks for the replies mamas!! It's fun to get the feedback!! I would love to see your pictures too!

mama_tigress- You're boys are SOOO cute!!! I showed the picture to my older boys and they LOVED all the hair!! You'll have to share more pics of those adorable boys!!!

vanauken- The mirroring of features is so intriguing to me. You reminded me of our twins getting their teeth at the same time. Unfortunately, I wasn't a very good mommy- I didn't write down which tooth or dates but I do remember them getting the same ones (or sometimes the opposite side) at the same time. I just assumed it was more of a fluke. Did you other mamas have LOs whose teeth came in at the same time?

Thanks again for the feedback! I learn so much from all of you smart mamas!! I would've never even questioned this topic- thanks Julia'sMom for posting this question!!

I could have written this about my MZ boys. (At least we assume MZ, as it was a very thin membrane at 14 weeks and came to a clean "T" where they met the placenta.) I wondered about what examining the placenta postpartum revealed, but I was hemorrhaging at that point and very tired (ended up with a transfusion about 33 hours later because my hemoglobin/hematocrit levels kept dropping, and dropping) and I didn't pursue questioning it.

Anyway, our boys looked so different to me that I began to wonder. My husband was like, "Of course they're MZ. They were monochorionic!" (But that's what I was questioning, WERE they? I mean, I'm sure they were, but I just wanted confirmation.)

They are morphing into looking more like each other now (8 weeks old) and they do fool us sometimes. Noel's face will plump up like Linus's, or Linus will look longer in the face and sort of transform into a Noel-like look before our eyes. If they are nursing (so I only can see part of their faces) or sleeping, it can be hard to tell them apart. And yet sometimes it's so COMPLETELY obvious.

Blows my mind the identical "things" they will do, though. Like when they have the same number of hitches in one of their broken sighs, (usually while tandem nursing), and they do so in unison. (You know the kind, right? Hitch-hitch-hitch-hitch on the intake of breath, then a long shuddering exhale. Or three, or two hitches. And somehow they manage to hit them together, with the same number of shudders!) This happens often enough that it is notable and amusing.

And oh, with the tandem nursing noises--they make all these varied and pitch-specific interlocking sounds while nursing together. It's very funny, musical, rhythmic, and regular. They just start right up and don't miss a beat. Or they "share" halves of the creaking hinge sound. It's great.

So anyway, I guess I am operating on the assumption that they ARE, indeed, MZ even though they look so different (and yet similar.)

Any thoughts on whether they actually LOOK like MZ twins?

You can see their different facial shapes in this one

(In that first photo, their arms and legs are randomly doing that mirror image thing that happens so often. Funny to notice. But totally random, of course.)

Another factor is that Noel seems to have inherited Gilbert's Syndrome from his daddy, so it affects his coloring a little. Since they share the same genes it seems they both inherited the tendency or the possibility of Gilbert's, but it doesn't necessarily manifest in both just because they're (presumably ) MZ.

Oh my goodness, it took awhile but your page finally loaded in for me and your boys are ADORABLE! They do look a lot alike..... Let's see, if they are MZ, they were di/di, is that correct? Less common statistically, but most definitely possible.

And Toby and Ari? Soooo cute! I love how much personality comes through their eyes and their expressions. And love the hair whorls, of course!

Awww, I am anticipating the future!

Amy, they do look MZ, but they also look different (and absolutely incredibly adorable). My boys are looking more alike as they get older, too, and the difference in head/face shape is less noticeable. See, here is a photo from the NICU at 20 days old (they came home at 25 days):

And this is them today, chronoligically almost 5 months and corrected close to 3 months (in reality somewhere in between):

Beautiful fluffy bums.

Last year at this time. Neither boy was walking yet, about 20 months here. Obviously they were climbing, lol.

And finally a recent picture taken just last Saturday at Craters of the moon national park in Idaho.

My girls have some mirroring, which I guess isn't surprising since they're momos and split so late . . . they have the same cowlick (hair whorl) on the back of their head, except one whorls clockwise and the other counterclockwise. They got their first tooth within 24 hours of each other . . . but on opposite sides of their mouths. Second tooth within 24 hours of each other, again on the opposite side. I'm really curious to see if they end up being one right handed and the other left!
My girls were diamniotic but they have the exact thing you discribe - opposite swirling hair whirls, erupting teeth at the same time but on opposite sides - and at 2.5 I can definately say that I have one leftie and one rightie. Too fun

Thank you SO much girls for all of the awesome pictures!!!: What beautiful kids you all have!!! This has made my day to see them all!!

AmyC- Congratulations on your new LOs!! They are beautiful!! I know you mentioned you're excited for the future- I look at your sweet little angels and it makes me miss that time!! Your boys look MZ to me. My LOs always looked like super chubby things it was so hard to tell what they were going to look like. I always thought once the were more vertical I had a better idea of their true look, if that makes any sense.

I actually called my OB this week and asked if they automatically checked to see if they are MZ or DZ after they were born. They had a placental pathology report, but they weren't able to determine anything from it. It was interesting to hear the report though. Did you deliver with a doctor? I wonder if you could get that information? Your boys remind me a lot of my twins. It seems like Noel has a thinner face than Linus- am I getting that right? How do they compare in weight and height? My thinner guy was 4lbs 15oz and my other guy was 6lbs 9oz. They are still a couple pounds different now.

wendyjoe- Do you know if your girls are identical? What causes the mirroring? I need to look that up!

Having three older boys that are very different it's really fun for me to have these two who have so many similarities.

That's so cool . . . I think the mirroring is really interesting. Some places I read say it's related to late splitting, and some don't . . . I really wonder what the truth is. I think it's just one of those things where they just don't know!

Everyone's babies are so cute!
