Remember...run from water, hide from wind.

Let's keep the roads clear for our coastal friends...we'll be hunkering down on the north side, hoping the trees don't crash through our roof.

Agreed! The biggest issue with the Rita evacuation was a bunch of people that had no business trying to leave were leaving.
I am on a few homeschooling boards and had to roll my eyes this morning when someone that lives in Conroe posted they were leaving for San Antonio.
I would much rather keep the highways open for our coastal neighbors.

I just got a letter from my 13 year olds Spanish teacher that CFISD will be closed tomorrow and the kids have to leave immediately after school today.

LOL I think anybody south of Conroe will be hunkerin' down.
BTW - I love the word

I'm thinking of you guys and hope it's not as bad as some are predicting. If you haven't already seen this blog you should definitely check it out.

Sending good vibes your way, Mamas!

FWIW I had to go into HOuston this morning (from the woodlands) to retrieve my laptop so I can work remotely from home. I wanted to get in and out before evacuation traffic got too heavy.

45 was running well ...so if you are thinking of heading North ...do so now before it gets too nuts.

As for us, we'll be "hunkering" here....besides wind/tree related damage (which we are up for any time there is one of those crazy gulf storms)...we should be ok.

For all of those in the mandatory evac areas...GL!

Ok mammas, I'm starting to get a little nervous...here is a great link to check predicted wind speeds for your area (you can zoom in really close); it updates every 3 hours.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26295161/

Up to this point I was making Biscotti in preparation, but now I might be doing a little more!

Thanks for the link! I'm starting to wonder if we should leave, we're in Spring Branch, but after evacuating for Rita, I just really don't know...

Anyways, heading out now w/ds to load up on supplies. Hmmm, should probably check if classes are cancelled tomorrow at UH...maybe that's wishful thinking on my part

We are staying put and making preparations today. I am clearing out our closet under our stairs just in case. I also have to go over to another mama's house on here that is out of town to bring stuff in from outside there. We are all stocked up and gassed up otherwise. I hope everyone stays safe.

Sugar Land area schools are closed tomorrow.
I just came from HEB near Greatwood, and it was VERY busy. I got the last big pack of bottled water on the shelf- although I am not one to buy crappy bottled water, I got in on the panic, and just grabbed some.

People had carts overflowing with peanutbutter, crackers, etc. All powdered milk was gone, and most of the bread was gone. The batteries had a "guard"- an employee there to "hellp"-- people were buying charcoal, paper towels, TP, adn paper plates......

We are staying here. Mayor White said that he doesn't want any employers to have their employees come to work tomorrow (except medical and other necessary staff)--

Cancelled- Main campus too- you should get a text message and a call if you're signed up for them.

Funny that he made the announcement to all of Houston and nobody has seen anything here (I work in the legal dept at City Hall Annex). I just hope getting home today isn't a nightmare!!

We're home and declined an induction given that we'd probably go into labor on Saturday.

So now we'll just stay here and do some last minute little things - but we feel safe and have a good set of supplies stored up.

And if I go into labor on my own - well then, it was just meant to be that way!

Well, ladies school has been cancelled here since Tuesday afternoon. I bought a bunch of supplies to wait out the storm and then a bunch of people were trying to talk me into leaving. Now it looks like Ike has turned up your way. We will probably still get a bunch of rain, but they are no longer talking about shutting off all utilities.
I just want to say that I don't envy you and I am glad that I get to stay home. Yea!!

Looks ok from my vantage point (downtown)/normal speed - let's hope it stays that way for 4 more hours! :

It looks like we'll be eating our frozen vegetables and chicken for dinner tonight!

We are headed north to my parents house. So not that far out of town. Our house would be fine, but covered in plastic from repainting after our fire.

Still praying the storm weakens or changes course to somewhere uninhabited!

Some models are now even predicting it to keep turning up towards Beaumont...still nerve-wracking though!

We're stocked for easy foods, some propane for the camping stove, lots of bottled water, but have lots of things to do.

We need to let the cattle and horses into all pastures. We need to fill all the five gallon buckets with extra water for the chickens/barn cats/pet cats/dogs. We're mowing all the drainage ditches today, plus as much else as we can get done, since our land drains really slowly and we will probably be too soft to mow again for quite a while. Do the laundry so we have as much clean as possible....

As I mentioned above, our area was without power for about 2 weeks with Rita. The 'natives' tell me to expect the same whenever there's a big storm.

I'm not sure what else....a bunch of things.

We have our own diesel tank, so we're set on fuel. (Our car, truck and tractor all are diesel.)

We could stand some extra batteries, lamp oil and a few other things. I'll head to town and see how crazy things are. Nothing we need is dead urgent, so I may just skip it.

I just checked NOAA again and the 10 AM update has it moved even further north again. Just a little, but still.
