This weeks Target ad is ticking me off

The ad from the Sunday paper 9-7-08:

http://weeklyad.target.com/target/de...nav%5Fweeklyad

It's an emphasis on baby items. Front page on the bottom:

Get a $5 gift card when you buy any 2 items. Items to choose from:

-Diapers (made from petroleum and other chemicals, take energy to produce and go into landfills)
-formula
-baby bottles (which can be related to pumping but mostly related to formula, assuming that everyone will need them).

You have to go to page 5 to get to a breastpump, and no free gift card with that.

Can't say I'm surprised. Does anyone know if the formula companies make deals for this sort of thing?

I don't know for sure if they make deals so to speak, but I think with the smaller package size/price of formula, it makes it easier for deals and sales to be made versus pumps and pumping accessories which are larger, more intricate/specialty, and more expensive. Basically Target can afford to put the formula on sale more often b/c they can afford buy it in such huge lots, the savings they make doing so can be shared with the customer.

I do remember at least once there was a decent deal on the PISA, like $30 off or something? Maybe about a year or two ago at the latest.

One thing I do hate about my local Wal-Mart (did I say one thing, there are really several ) is that they put the pumps on the bottom shelf and there are tons of other things around it, it's confusing to find it. My cousin's wife went to get a pump there and she called me saying she couldn't find it. I told her which aisle it was and talked her through it and she STILL didn't find it. It's obvious they aren't putting a high priority on selling them. When I worked there we had to take classes on where to position products on the shelf based on what needed to be sold and bottom shelf was basically the worst spot. Sad...

Maybe we should write letters to encourage Target to include things like nursing bras and milk storage bags with "baby items" for sales like this. And carrying Hotslings is a start, but maybe if they realized there is a market for things like Becos and Kozys, they would start carrying them, too. But really, I realized pretty early on that any of the big box stores just weren't going to have much for me in the way of "baby items". Diapers? Cloth. Feeding? Boobs. Solids? Homemade. I went from excitedly perusing the entire baby section when pregnant, and just ignoring the bottles and formula, to skipping over it entirely when the baby was born (except for the diapers, which we didn't switch to cloth until 4 months). And I don't think I've been in a Babies R Us in AGES, and have neither the reason nor desire to go there with #2.

I've seen breastpumps on sale at Target before. Once they had the Medela handpump (I forget which one its called) all sold out and they were offering the sucky evenflo one instead. Or a raincheck. I don't think the Evenflos were moving at all. People wanted the Medelas.

I bought my breastpump at Target and opened a Target charge card that day. Saved 15%, I think.

Basically, Target is a business and a they need to turn a profit. If the majority is buying diapers and formula then that's what they are gonna push.

What cracks me up is the title "born to save." I'm pretty sure that breastfeeding and cloth diapers are the real money savers! At least in my house they are

I know, that's the funniest part. I was talking about cloth diapers to a girl in a checkout the other day and she said "Oh, they're too expensive to me! $10 for a 3 pack (talking about Gerber birdseye I guess?)" Ummm...reusable honey, do you not get that part?

Target does run a promo to get a free GC with the purchase of a Medela pump every now and then. Not all the time, but I've seen it several times while I've been pregnant this time.

They carry the Moby Wrap now, too.

I was impressed that they changed their aisle markers though. They used to say "Natural Feeding" and now they say "Breast-Feeding."

I have heard from friends in larger market areas that Target is also selling BG 3.0 diapers now. They are consistantly out of stock so I hope the trend to sell them is here to stay.

I got an awesome deal when I was pregnant with my first son at Target on a breastpump and accessories. For each breastfeeding related item I bought I got a breastfeeding set attachment for my pump. It saved me over $100. This was back in early 07.

Of course, my son refused to take bottles so it was actually a huge waste of money, but it was an awesome deal.

I don't care for target.

It smells like popcorn. I can't stand people or places that can't shop without eating something. :

I have found that Target has a WAY better selection when it comes to BFing and natural parenting supplies than other big box stores. They have an actual selection of pumps from $30 to $300. Different types of breast pads, replacement parts for my pump, etc. Not to mention baby legs, swim diapers, cloth diapers and slings/carriers. Almost as much as BRU if not more...

Also, remember that as more women need these types of products, the stores will carry them, so we need to be reaching out to the customers first, supporting BFing so in turn, Target will start to pick up on the trend.

Thanks! I was just more ranting than anything, about the product placement in the ad and focus on formula and dipes instead of BF/cloth. Good to know they have offered a GC with pumps before. I don't see the ads every week. And I have also noticed they have better products now. It wasn't that long ago I was looking for a BPA free sippy, there wasn't any. I think they might have some now and I just bought a Thermos Funtainer from there.
I didn't know they had BabyLegs and moby wrap!

What are BG diapers?

You must have an amazing target, I went to our local one thinking that they would have something, and all they had were the slings that you can find in Meijer and gerber prefolds. No pins no snappys nothin' cool.

They are the bum genius diapers. It's a pocket diaper that is one-size, adjusting with baby as he/she grows.

The Target near me has a great selection of nursing supplies, carries hotslings (and a bjorn/mei tai type carrier that I'm not recalling the name of), nursing covers, wetbags, babylegs and BumGenius. I've seen great offers on breast pumps in the past involving a gift card.

There are a lot of things that annoy me about Target, like their return policy, but I appreciate and respect their attempts to include these types of items in their inventory.

I think that it is the initial outlay of cash to get "enough" diapers/covers/etc. that is involved. That is one of the main reasons I do not cloth diaper. The others being: my husband is a SAHD and I WOH and he does not do cloth (with our son, I did cloth for a while, but got rid of them since we were done having kids--ha! He refused to do cloth. I loved it. If I left him with the baby, I'd better have a package of sposies) and we can't seem to keep up with regular laundry--nevermind adding diapers to the mix.

I agree. I was looking into CDing with DS but the money that it would've taken to just get a stash was not pretty!! Honestly, I feel a little persecuted sometimes because we don't CD. :
Oh, and the laundry I'm right with ya mama!!

Yes, exactly. Our Target has a relatively new, and fairly extensive, selection of more natural products (California Baby--which is on sale this week!--Kiss My Face, Seventh Gen,etc.) Also, I buy my Lansinoh nursing pads there, and they have been on sale 5 or 6 times since my DD was born. And the breast pump *is* on sale-- but that's not an item that the majority of their customers will need, so why would it be on the front cover?

ETA-- my Dh also will not go for the cloth diapers. As pps have said, I have a very hard time keeping up with regular laundy. He (probably correctly) feared that I would just end up spending lots of money on fancy cloth diapers and then letting them rot in the pail. sigh. I will be a good housekeeper when I grow up (and have a MAID!)
