Blog on local paper's website

There is a blog on my local paper's website that is about vitamin D and bfing and it seems horribly anti-breastfeeding to me. Every time I sit down to write a reply I get so frustrated that I can'tdo it. So first off, does this article bother you? Also, what would you write? Even better, if you have a sec leave a reply telling her how harmful this article is.

I posted a comment, but I don't see it yet. Ugh. Just the kind of stuff we don't need out there. Nothing like the ol' "I had formula, and I turned out just fine" excuse.

I noticed this person is from FL, the Sunshine state. Perhaps she should get some.

Also, it's not that breastmilk is deficient in Vit D, it's that MOM is, and fails to pass sufficient quantities in her milk.

Posted my comment, twice by accident!

This whole issue that babies need supplemental vitamins in addition to breast milk really bothers me. :

When J was born the hospital never mentioned anything, but at our 2 week visit to the ped, we were given a hand out that told us if we were exclusively breast feeding to give our baby TriViSol, a vitamin. I asked my mom if she had done this with either my sister or I when she nursed us, she didn't. I asked a couple of friends with older children if they had, and they also said no. Next time I was in the store I went down the baby aisle to check out this stuff and no surprise, it's made by Enfamil. So to me it just seems like they couldn't get me to spend money on formula, so they'll get it from me with some vitamins.

I just feel that if this is such a crucial problem that more babies are now Vitamin D deficient, then why can't doctors educate nursing mothers on how to increase their own intake of Vit D instead of pushing it through an artificial source?

I was also annoyed when my pediatrician insisted i supplement with trivisol.

I insisted that BM is perfect and that my son gets plenty of sun & he's not at deficient in vitimins.

She finally agreed (after all, I wasn't going to comply) and agreed that for MY baby he didn't need it, but the standard practice in that group is still to recommend it for all babies. Sheesh.

Our AP friendly ped seemed embarrassed to tell me that the recommendation is now to suppliment at 2 mths. She said she would not recommend it until 4 mths for dd because it can cause more spitting up and dd already spits up a lot and dd and I get outside reguarly. I plan to ignore the recommendation at 4 mths, and I don't expect this ped to push it

Arg!

i asked our ap friendly doctor about vit d supplementation (i take vit d supplements fairly erratically). she told me because i am NOT vit d deficient there is no reason for my son to receive supplements (my son's previous pediatrician said he needed them). my naturopathic doctor said the same thing.

seems like the "establishment" can't even agree on this one
