RRP - Insert sizes?

I plan to sew some recycled RRPs for my munchkin on the way, and I'm thinking about making the "fortune cookie" insert (using the microfiber towels from Costco). But I'm wondering how many different sizes of inserts I'll need and how big they should be! This is my first diaper sewing project, and I'm slightly nervous.

I do have a stash of newborn fitteds, so I will most likely not be using the RRPs until she outgrows the newborns. Will it be sufficient to just make a set of small inserts and a set of larges? How big should the smalls be? Should the larges fill up the pocket completely at it's largest size, or should I make them a bit smaller than that? Or should I just make the diapers and decide on insert sizes once the baby actually starts wearing them?

TIA for your help!

my favorite insert for RRP's are trifolded infant sized prefolds. If I need a doubler for nap time or at night I'll add one microfiber towel trifolded as well. This works great for a 15-20lb baby. It would probably work for a smaller baby too because there's still a little room at the end to fold down. I like inserts that can unfold flat again because I feel like they get cleaner and dry faster. I'm at work or I'd measure the dimensions of my infant prefolds-I would make something of similar dimensions that can be trifolded. i'd make some that are shorter too for when the baby is smaller so it will leave more space at the top so that you can fold the diaper down.
