Induction

Hi,

I have been having contractions for 2 weeks, plus lots of mucous and bits of mucous plug but every time am checked am still closed.
Now everyone in the GD clinic team has mentioned, including the OB, that they never allow a GD patient to go over one day.
Sigh. They mentioned inductions.

I am mentally preparing myself for things not going the way I dreamt, but would like the following advice:

how to naturally induce?

I would like baby to go out when ready, not according to the arbitrary due date.
Also, my sugar levels are very normal, baby is absolutely normal size, have no other problems at all, other than developed GD last few weeks. Am a conundrum to them all and have been told to even up my sugars. I guess it is just the way it is an my hormones are not reacting well to starches. The crazy thing is my diet is pretty much the same the whole pregnancy so it's not like my diet has lowered my sugars now which they automatically assume as well. Plus they assume there is no fitness until they see what I do for a living. More conundrum. I am just complaining that they cannot stick everyone in the same box when diagnosing things. It may be faster, but not correct.

Anyway, off topic, am just digesting this information.
I don't want an induction. However, if it is necessary for baby's health then of course, I wouldn't even blink. However, I just don't like the way it is "across the board" for everyone. They don't look at us individually, just 'oh well in these cases we don't go over because baby is big'. Um, didn't you just say baby is NOT big and neither am I? And my sugar levels are great with the insulin? Then they say if I get pregnant again, I should go on the same diet immediately (um, how many times do I need to repeat to them it is the same freaking diet I normally eat?). Sigh. Just listen to me people! On the other hand, they ave been very nice and supportive and bear no bad feelings at all to them. I am just trying to digest a lot at once, and am trying to complain about no on really listening, except for my lovely midwife.

Plus doesn't induction mean I have to lay on my back? That is so uncomfortable now, I can't imagine it during labour.

Then i worry well they'll have to cut me open and what if baby is not ready for his/her grand entrance? that is my concern. I guess it may not matter being a few days off from a real due date but I just hope everything goes ok.

Sigh.

Any advice, good energy or thought are much much appreciated today.

Thanks for letting me vent.

I would bring these questions up with your practitioner, re: do I have to be on my back? I've heard of mothers who have had Pitocin and were in hands/knees positions, so I think it depends on what kind of monitoring they do. Go in with a birth plan of your ideal birth, and then work with them to get something as close as possible to that. I think if you have specifics, they will be willing to work with you.

Wow, today is your due date! Do whatever you can at this point to put a positive spin on your labor, however it goes. I'll be sending you positive vibes! I've been very lucky with healthy uneventful pregnancies... I can't even imagine being in your position. If I were, though, I'd choose to pick the practitioner's brain and not let them put me through like a head of cattle being ushered through the system. I hope you can creatively find a solution together that gives you and your baby the best experience possible. Good luck and !

ETA: I know it can be intimidating to face up to an authoritative doctor and expect to be treated like an equal, but I know you can do it! A good doctor will treat you better for it, too.

  • thanks! I did not even consider (shows you where my brain is today...) going over the birth plan with them.
my due date is in 2 weeks. my signature date is just September (20)08, sorry if it is confusing.

Thank you for your kind words and help

If baby is normal sized and you have good control of your sugar, I would seriously question their policy.

A good friend of mine suggests using an approach similar to eating salami - one slice at a time. For example, if they suggest date x for induction, you already have a commitment that day - it would work better for you, say, two days after that. Or, you could counter their induction offer with an offer to take a NST or have an ultrasound to verify baby's health.

As far as natural induction methods go, I'd find a good acupuncturist who specializes in fertility/pregnancy. They can do cervical ripening which will be the first step.

Good luck!

I hope your baby shows up before "real" induction talks get underway. Hope you can find a way to stay calm and at peace while you wait it out.
