I picked up a tatting bobbin in the local oxfam the other day, and I have no idea what to do with it. Does anyone have any good resources?

Did you pick up lace bobbins or a tatting shuttle? Those are two different ways to make lace. So it depends on what it looks like.

If it is a shuttle, here is a link to a bunch of other links:

I've tried my hand at needle tatting. I bought a book, but did find a few online resources.

If it's bobbin lace, that is something different still. It usually takes several bobbins. It's also something I would love to try someday.

Good luck and have fun!

It's a shuttle : I knew I'd heard that word before, I just didn't remember it.
Thanks for the links!

I used to have a ton of links, but I haven't picked up my shuttle in ages. For learning, I'd definitely start with #10 crochet cotton (a.k.a. bedspread cotton), #3 perle cotton (I think it's number three - comes in a little ball rather than a tiny skein) or fingering weight wool rather than the #70 tatting cotton if you don't want to go crazy with your stitches and actually be able to see what you are doing. Tatting books, especially vintage patterns, are fairly easy to find in the library as well. I think there is a chapter devoted to it in the Reader's Digest Guide to Needlework - they also have a decent section on bobbin lace too if you are interested.

If you want, I have a copy of Tatted Lace of Beads that could use a new home since the chances of my picking it up again in the near future are slim to nil. I probably have a few shuttles with removable bobbins (way easier to wind) and some tatting needles that I could happily rehome as well.

Here's a tatting webring I dug up which may prove useful.

Thankyou I'll hang fire on the book until I see if I can actually do this- I remember you threatening me with this a while ago, when I was heading ever closer to membership of the seamstresses guild. Beads are nice though. Pretty.
