Hospital based MWs, family docs? (DC area/VA/MD)

Hi. My SIL is expecting and wants to find a midwife practice or family practice that delivers in a hospital.(or it it me that is trying hard to open their eyes?)

I am trying to encourage homebirth/birthing center, but I haven't got that far

They live in DC. This is all new to her (she is from Eastern Europe) and I am trying gentle persuasion to hopefully at least encourage natural childbirth as much as possible. So, if you had a good experience with in a hospital in the area, could you let me know (feel free to PM me). Any recommended Bradley classes or other resources that could help them consider this path?

Her "OB" for now told her that his C-section rate was 26% and implied that she could schedule it with no prob. (My family doc in IL's rate is 4% and he is retiring from OB work, much to my dismay. Darn AMA)

Thanks.

Your sister in IL.

Margaret

Margaret -- I'm sure you've already gone over this with her, but be sure to have her watch AMERICAN hospital births, and all those ridiculous shows on TV.

American hospital births are faaaaaaaaar faaaaaaar different from Eastern Europe. I used to work in the FSU and was shocked for how different society was - how gentle birth was.

Definitely have her watch The Business of Being Born, too!!! They still have occasional community screenings. There is a showing Tuesday, Sept 16 at 5:30 at University of MD's School of Nursing (in downtown Baltimore). Or if she is a NetFlix subscriber, she can rent it from them.
