Why??

Ok..I had my son (age 9) at the Dr. today for a little lump between his ribs..anyway....the dr. was looking at his chart as we have not been in about 3 years. He asked why and I said.."He hasn't been ill." He proceeds to look at what immunizations we have had and starts talking about the Hep A they are recommending and the chicken pox vax. I politely declined and he seemed ok with it. The nurse came in and said "It is probably good that you didn't want to do it because we don't have the one your insurance will pay for..only the other brand." HUH? : I am thinking I missed this somewhere....can someone shed some light? Different vaccines based on who your insurance is with??? Is it just different manufactuers....I am confused. Glad I am not doing them none the less....

Thanks for your wisdom!

All I know is that states purchase vaccines in bulk and then sell them on to the physicians, so I guess state health insurance plans have specific brands they know were purchased for mass vaccination.

In PA, at our peds office there is a sign posted stating that many insurance companies will not pay for "shots", if your does not, they state to go to the local health dept. I asked about this and was told that many insurance co. will not pay "after the fact" and people complain and it is a cost to the Dr. office to try and collect. Proof of insurance paying has to be done up front regarding vaxs. Same said, many insurances need certain code to pay and others aren't as picky.

Ok..thank you. We are not on state ins. but it is Cigna and in my opinion they suck. So I can see them being really picky about what one they would allow. Thanks again and have a great day momma's!

All insurance companies have a list of what brands of everything cover and which they don't. This applies to rx, vaxes, etc. Some brands they will ocver at different % than others. I don't work with insurance anymore so I can't remember the name of the list.
