school/play clothes for toddler boy

So my almost 3 year old had his first day of preschool yesterday! Can't believe it!!!! It went pretty well but I'm realizing he doesn't have many long pants and the weather here seems to be cooling quickly...He's very skinny and unless I buy pants with the adjustable waistband (you know, like maternity pants for little boys) they just slip right off him as he walks...

I made him some really cute sweats last year using the instructions from the rookie mom site for pants from an old t-shirt (i just folded the fabric to imitate the folded sides of the shirt) and they came out cute...i've done some using that same idea to make the long shorts that all the kids are wearing these days...

What I'm looking for are a few EASY patterns for boy clothes...I'm a beginner sewer and don't want to stress out...also I don't want to spend a ton of patterns so a few that are versatile or can be mix/matched would be great.

Thanks mamas...I'm really getting into the sewing...I'll try to post a pic of the cute shorts I made him for his first day of school too!
:::: DS wanted that smilie in here. LOL

there's a free pattern over at diaperswappers called yoga pants. It gives instructions on how to custom fit a pair of yoga style pants that are supper easy to make. I made a pair last night for my supper mini 3 yr old and she loves them!

here's the pattern http://www.diaperswappers.com/forum/...+pants+pattern

if you don't have any stretchy fabric, for the waist, make the waist band bigger so you can put elastic in it (basicly making a casing for the elastic)

My DS is still a baby so I sew mostly rompers for him. But I plan to sew more "little boy" rather than baby clothes as he gets older, so I have been scoping out patterns.

I think pants are pretty easy. They are basically 4 peices of fabric- a front and a back for each leg. Look for a boys pants pattern marked Easy, or 1 Hour, or somesuch. If you can find one without a seperate wasitband attached, it will be easier. Pick out a few possible patterns and ask a sales lady which one she thinks will be easier.

If you want to be able to use the same pattern for pants again next year, trace the size you need onto tissue paper before cutting it out, and leave the original pattern intact for later use.

For fabrics, I like to use courderoy for winter pants. It is pretty have found Hancock's to have a much better courderoy selection than JoAnns.

Good luck!
