Getting the musty smell out of furniture from craigslist?

We have a guest room, and my mom just bought a dresser for it on craigslist (she visits a lot so the dresser is basically for her). My dh picked it up, and it was in someone's basement or garage, and it just smells really musty and smelly and gross. Right now it's sitting in our garage til I get a chance to clean it this weekend. Anyway, it REEKS. How can I get the smell out?

I would put it out in the sun. I think the sun does wonders for smells. At least it would not hurt to try.

I know some people who did a lot of work with furniture. If it's mildew/mold it can be a serious job. Is this painted wood?

Did you get a chance to clean it up this weekend? How is it now?

There's one thing I've found that works but it's not natural. Mix 1 tablespoon of bleach in 1 quart of water. Then add 1 tablespoon of vinegar. Spray it on the inside of the cabinet and let it set for a while. THen wipe it out with a damp cloth and let it dry outside.

I had a musty wooden recorder and it totally got the smell out of that.

good luck.
