perfume

I am completing my stash by buying off diaperswappers. I have purchased from 3 or 4 people and it seems like everyone is using Tide. Is that stuff really OK to use? Am I going to need to strip them?

After using Allens and then Charlie's, I'm not used to clothes/diapers smelling like a fragrance.

How do I get that out? maybe vinegar? I don't like perfumey diapers.

i think i would definitely strip with a squirt of dawn and then rinse several times. you can add a splash of vinegar in one of the rinses. that will take care of any tide buildup and the smell.

Wow. When I was a regular on DS, Tide was a no-no. I can't imagine that the formulation changed since i haven't seen any ads for it.

Bumping and asking for more help!

I inherited a bunch of covers along with AIOs and clothes from a friend. She is apparently really into her fabric softeners. I was able to get the scent mostly out of the clothes, but the covers- mostly Thirstys (sp?)- are so far hopeless.

I've washed them with my regular unscented detergent a number of times, with vinegar several times, and with baking soda. I've SOAKED them in vinegar and hot water. What else can I do? Not only can I not tolerate the smell, they make anything they touch smelly! I've seen suggestions to put them in direct sun, but as an apartment dweller, this would be *very* difficult for me to do for any length of time.

DS is just about ready for the next size covers, so I could really use these hand-me-downs about now. Is there any hope?

I have used homemade goat milk soap laundry soap -- tide just about bowls me over with the smell. Even the dryer next door running with dryer sheets are too much for me any more.

Oh, I feel you. I hate all that smell and it gives me a headache, and regular Tide is NOT okay for diapers, but no one listens. All powdered Tides (and most of the liquids) have enzymes and optical brighteners on top of the perfumes and dyes, which almost all manufacturers warn against, but it is the fad now. People think their diapers are so clean b/c of the perfume and optical brighteners, but what they really need to do is take better care to rinse completely with an approved detergent.

I would strip them with Calgon or RLR. And in the future, ask people before you buy what they wash in. That's what I do. Some will still lie, but it helps weed out the worst smelling diapers.

I started to use Tide on our CD's because everything else was not cleaning quite right. For over a year we used F&C detergents and LOVED that there were no scents so it is still a struggle putting up with the Tide. But the CD's are clean, but they got crunchy so I had to start using Ecover fabric softener on them, which has an annoying smell all it's own....but it does make them super soft.

I'm considering going back to Charlies once I can put them back in the sun since Charlies doesn't do much for stains. I'm guessing the smells will eventually just fade away.

But I think using RLR Laundry Treatment would help, so you guys might want to try to find some of that. I find it at Kroger and Brookshires, but it is also sold online.

Tide Free liquid here (toploader)! There's actually an entire thread on the Diaper Chat forum on DS about Tide and the raves. I'll go find it and link if that's ok with the mod's. Otherwise, go search....it's a massive thread at like 28 pages.

Tide Free liquid (but not the HE version) only has one offending ingredient: enzymes. This may or may not be a problem for your baby. My ds2 gets blisters from enzymes. Also, it is hard to rinse.

Thanks! Looking for some RLR in my area now.

What exactly is RLR? And how does it work?

I'm curious what would really work to get rid of that perfumy ick on hand-me-downs too. I received some crib sheets and mattress pads from someone and they smelled so bad of Tide perfume I finally gave up, after washing them lord knows how many times, and donated them to st. vinnies. Tide just kills me- like walking into a perfume wall.

I sincerely wonder tho, how do you tell if your clothes are really clean when the perfume could be covering up dirty smell? I've used free & clear detergents for years and can tell immediately whether something still dirty. Sorry if I'm wandering in left field here, I'm just trying to wrap my head around the whole perfume thing. Reminds me of being at college and not showering and just spraying on extra perfume...

I think the issue is that a lot of people on DS are just there for cloth diapers and don't skew as crunchy as MDC, so the whole perfume/unnatural ingredients thing doesn't bother them. I don't get it either.

totally off topic ROTFLOL as I sit here and debate on taking a shower, knowing that at 44 I am walking into an enviornment of 18-22 year old ART Students who could really care less if I am neat and bathed, and they themselves just rolled about of bed 20 minutes before with a quick spray of fragrance.

on topic: masking with perfumed detergents is what many do when reselling. They think it covers the buildup smell, while really only compounding it.

My college student wash washing laundry here yesterday -- with very heavy perfumed detergent. My poor washing machine.

I've been wondering how to get rid of this smell, too. I got a box full of hand-me-downs from DH's boss and they all reek. I'm chemically sensitive, so of course that makes it even worse. I can NOT put these clothes on my child smelling like this.

I hadn't thought to ask what diapers have been washed in before buying... that's a great idea, though.

Have you tried using Bac Out ... it's great at removing stains/ odors ? You can pick it up at any Whole Foods (or other similar store). It's worth a try.
