Need OB or Midwife in Encinitas / San Diego area

Hi,

I am looking for a holistic OB and/or a midwife in the Encinitas, Carlsbad or San Diego (preferably North San Diego) area for my pregnancy. Any recommendations?? I'd love to hear any feedback -- positive or constructive -- on OBs, birthing centers, hospitals in the area.

Thank you!

I don't know from personal experience, but Scripps Encinitas hospital has midwives who work in their regular L&D area.

There is an in-hospital birth center at UCSD in Hillcrest, and a freestanding one nearby.

I know there are lots of homebirth midwives in N. County, but I don't know any of them personally. We live further south and ours has an office near SDSU.

Good Luck!

If you are planning the hospital route Scripps Encinitas and UCSD in Hillcrest are the only two baby friendly hospitals.

As a PP said there are 2 BCs. Best Start is the freestanding one.

There is an OB at Scripps Encinitas that has a reputation for being very NCB friendly and he is recommended by a lot of MWs in case of multiples of breach. I don't have the name but it was something like Dr. Bider. There are many MWs who work out of both hospitals but I have no personal recommendation on them.

In N County I know of 4 HB MWs:
- Barabara from Alma Mama (I hear Alma Mama was closed but Barbara is still practicing)
- Meridith (Don't have a last name but she has a website) www.lovinghandsmidwifery.com
- Andrea Meyer 760-436-9166, andrea-midwife@adelphia.net
- There is a pair of MWs (one is a CNM) that have a practice in Encinitas. I can't remember their names and I can't find their website. Hopefully someone else can chime in.

There are several more in SD but the are largely in east county or near UCSD.

dr. bider (not sure on the spelling) is an amazing doctor down here with the reputation of gold. not very well liked by his peers (he is a Midwife in Disguise)
i believe he works out of UCSD, but i could be wrong. he works with barb a lot.
you can get in touch with her at amamamamidwifery.com. she can give you more info about him.
she will also travel to you to do prenatal care and if you are choosing hospital she can be your montrice there.
both are really great options for san diego.
good luck!

Michelle Freund is an AWESOME midwife. Warm, experienced, easy to talk to. She is based in Oceanside, although closer to Carlsbad.

Dr. Bider works at Scripps Encinitas and his reputation among midwives is fantastic.

There is also Jamin Sylvada and La Shel Montgomery who work together with an office in Encinitas. www.sandiegomidwife.com I've been seeing them for my prenatal care and have been very happy with them. Just 2 weeks(ish) to go!
