URGENT! Need a new DALLAS midwife ASAP!

I have a midwife and I am in desperate need of a real midwife who knows the Gaskin maneuver and isn't going to push me into chemical inductions and a c-section for a big baby. PLEASE!! I need recommendations for a midwife - I'm 39 weeks and due on the 19th. My current midwife freaked me out today and said my baby is too big to deliver. Below is my post from earlier today. If anyone can recommend a midwife who is willing to start this late in the game, I'd really appreciate it! Thank you!

Shoulder Dystocia

I had my weekly appointment with my midwife today and she said because I have a big baby (she's estimating over 9lbs), I may need a c-section. I burst into tears, of course. She said my ultrasounds place my baby in the 90th percentile in terms of size. I retorted that ultrasounds are inaccurate at determining prenatal weight. She said yes, but based on my baby's growth trend, she believes my baby is over 9lbs. She felt my belly and asked what I thought and I said 8.5 lbs and she said no, over 9lbs based on what she was feeling. She said since this is my first baby, there is no way of knowing if my pelvis can handle it!

My official due date is next Friday and I'll be 39 weeks tomorrow. If I don't go into labor before then, I'm at greater risk of having a more difficult delivery because of continued growth and she'll have to strongly recommend induction. So, I am going to walk every night and get down with DH to encourage labor before the 19th. Since shoulder dystocia is a problem in only 5-20% of big babies, I have to proceed with my plan and believe in my body. I'm so disappointed in this news.

I have another appointment on Monday and then Thursday. She wants to check to see if my baby engaged yet. She said big babies don't engage easily either! She couldn't feel my cervix today! Is there anything I can do?

Have any of you had this issue? I'm so scared of having a c-section and not being able to breast feed, bond, dying etc. Am I am being crazy?

You might try going down the list at http://northtexasnaturalfamily.wordp...egnancy-birth/. If you don't find someone in the list of midwives, don't discount calling the childbirth educators too, because they may know someone who's not listed.

Meanwhile, trust your body and its ability to do what it has been doing your entire pregnancy. This isn't the time to talk yourself into "I can do it, I can do it" -- you already ARE doing it! Just keep on keepin' on ...

Best wishes ~

My DD was 8.5 lbs. and we had no trouble. She even came on her due date! Keep walking, we walked every night about 2.5 miles with the dog. There are also pressure points you can try. Don't let them freak you out!

I can pretty much guess who your midwife is based on what you have said, and yes, you can definitly find someone who will think quite differently. I am a doula and local childbirth educator so I have worked with a lot of them.

I don't remember if you said in your post if you would be OK with a homebirth or want a birth center birth. If you are looking to homebirth, I recommend Cori Lively. She posts here on MDC as dallasmidwife or dallascpm. Her website is barefootmidwife.com. There are tons of other great midwives out there as well, I could fill up the page with names. A few to get you started are Gentle Beginnings in Hurst which is a birth center with several excellent CPMs on staff, Lisa Thomas and others at the Birth and Family Center in Grand Prarie, www.duerewards.net. Heading north the Allen Birth Center, or Lisa Black, Paloma Terra, Jane Gandy, Kathleen Mayorga....

You know, it might just be easier for you to PM if you want more info and exactly what you are looking for in a midwife. I can probably help more specifically that way! Also go to the Texas Association of Midwives website and you will find most everyone listed.

Good luck and happy birthing! I think you will find lots of midwives that trust your body to birth your baby. Try to relax by reading up about all the cool things your pelvis and your baby do to make it possible for delivery to happen and try to forget this seed of doudt planted by your midwife. Please update us!

Yes, there is...labor and delivery.

: Your mw has been possessed by an OB. There are plenty of moms on MDC who have delivered 10lb + babies at home and others that had sd with much smaller babes.

Too bad you are so far (I'm in SA); my mws take last minute patients whose previous birth plans fall through and are experienced with 'variations of normal'. Looks like the pp has you covered though.

I agree with Cori Lively. I've met her a few times and she's lovely. If my husband had been okay with a home VBAC I'd have been with her. If we ever have a 'surpise after vasectomy' baby we will be going with her for sure. She's lovely! I've heard awesome birth stories with her involved.

Good luck!

Namecalling (including "medwife" for midwife) is against MDC's User Agreement. Please edit, or I will need to remove the posts and alert, and I am having a lazy night and don't want to do that.

I met with Cori and I really liked her. I wanted to hire her but couldn't afford her fees.
I'm hoping I can find a midwife who won't charge me their full fee this late in the game.
Thank you so much for the recommendation!

I've had a 10 lb baby and a 9.8 lb baby naturally with my smallish 5'5" frame. Your body can have your baby! I know it's totally scary though. My MW rec is in Florida but good luck finding one thats perfect

You can look at one of the midwifes that have apprentices too, they charge lower fees in the first place and may give you a discount for being a late comer.

I know Ann Crowell has an apprentice right now whom I have met and like a lot. I have her card downstairs if you want more info. Also Sarah Jones is a CPM already but she is just starting her business here in Texas (she practiced elsewhere before), I don't think she many clients due quite yet so she would be perfect for fitting you in last min and probably open to a reduced fee as well. I really like her as friend and would even come doula for you for free to get to do a birth with her! The midwives at the Grand Prarie birth center have a few student midwives too that you could look into.

Like I said, let me know if you need more specifics, I have everyone's info downstairs but won't bother typing it all out unless you want me to.

I have met Sarah Jones as well... my midwife uses her as a second midwife during the birth and I reallyyy like her! Definatly worth checking with her too! I think the great thing about all the midwives out of Gentle Beginnings Birth Center (Christy, Sarah, Ann...) is that they are really passionate about midwifery itself and dont just do it as a business.

i would call family birth services in grand prarie and see if they have an apprentice or someone who would work out a low rate for you.

i used molly germash and LOVE her. she is in weatherford now though so i don't know if that's too far.

I second Family Birth Services in Grand Prairie. I used Molly Germash for my second birth (first was an induction due to size. *sigh*), and was more than pleased. I had a 9lb 4oz girl. I realize that she's in Weatherford now though. I don't know how plausable that is.

For my third birth, I used Sorani Munoz (also at FBS), who was an apprentice at the time. She was there for the birth of my second (my last two are only 13 months apart), and Molly was to be on vacation the entire month I was due. I trusted her. She did a great job. We were cautious while still limiting any interventions (He was born at 42w 5d, and the only intervention we took was having biophysical profiles done, just to make sure everything was a-okay in there.), and he was born with no problem. Oh, and he was 11lb 7oz. More than two pounds bigger than the baby I was induced with. She is now a staff midwife. I would easily use an apprentice there, too.

I am hoping the original OP found someone, but I just met Donnellyn Dominguez and she seems great and has lower fees that most midwives. I think she would be worth anyone interviewing.

Dinah Waranch. Her site. I've used her with all three of my kids and I love her to death. Because of your reasons for transferring I'll share a quick story from one of my births:

My second wasn't a "big" baby but he got stuck. Dinah wanted to turn him once it was obvious that my body was stalling because of it. I was scared and said no. She let that be. She finally ended up turning him much later after I agreed to let her. She didn't bother me about it, she just brought it up when I said how much it hurt. She gently reminded me that she could turn him. She had to put almost her entire arm up there to turn him (or so it felt, I think it was something like to the elbow or something a little less extreme ) but as soon as she did my body began pushing and he was out in just a few short pushes.

Anyway, I love her. She is terrific and she just moved to a new location that is right across from a lovely park/pond (Cottonwood Park) where you can walk while in labor if you choose to go that early on. Plus, if you are absent-minded like myself, she's close to a Whole Foods so you can pick up food or something.

I'd like to invite anyone on this thread who doesn't see their midwife, doula or childbirth educator listed at http://apconnect.org/pregnancy-birth/ and would like to recommend them to other area moms to please give me a PM or email me at apcDOTadminATgmailDOTcom. Totally free listing, no strings attached -- we just want to share names with local mamas.

Thanks!
