Beginner readers - Page 2

Thank you for all your wonderful suggestions and replies.

I just don't like the BOB books because of the story line. My kids are all about story lines and will question every little thing. "Pat has a hat" Why does Pat have a hat? Who is Pat? What color hat? etc. So story was a lot of my decision. I do like the McGuffey readers but I think they go more with the sight word reading more than building on phonics. I also really like the Dick and Jane books but I can't seem to find all of the individual books. They all seem to be combined into one big book which makes my dc feel overwhelmed.

So I am trying out the Nora Gaydos books with dd. I am hoping they will be a good fit. And I like how they build the story with each page. So if there is a question about the story, she can just keep reading to find out.

I love all the suggestions. I think I will go check out the other suggestions too. I know my ds is a strong phonics reader and he loves the computer. So I am going to check out the suggested web sites. I am not the kind of person to just use one thing.

Thanks again.

Try looking for the Dick and Jane Reading Collection. Ours is a boxed set of 12 readers. I bought it at a locally owned bookstore, so that is not of any use to you.

stupid question

I looked at teh Nora Gaydos books on amazon -- and they look cool

is there a catologe or someplace i can see them IN ORDER or grouped by level?

Amazon results are not in order -- Level 1 then an I am Reading Now (which may BE level 1) then a Level 4 then another I am Reading NOw ...

I'd like to see the set in some sort of order to know what is really there?

Stupid question.

Thanks

Also I THINK this is a collection of small Dick adn Jane books .. there is a second "case" too ...

also Amazon has several of the single story books (for 3.99 each) ... in addition ot the collections.

I saw the boxed dick & jane set recently but i can not remember where!! We have the big book.

Costco has the BOB books, $10 / level or whatever they are called.

We have all kinds of readers here, right now we're using mcguffy - my son's choice.

After ordering a few of Nora Gaydos' book sets on amazon I discovered that Barnes and Noble has the entire collection plus many extra games to go along with it. It was great to see them in person.
I don't have anything other than a couple single Bob books to compare them to, we liked the Gaydos books much better. The goofiness is just right for my son, and he seems to like them.
We haven't read any in a while, I think I will pull them out tomorrow.

The Bob books weren't really working for us either (my son quickly got bored with the stories and they didn't really boost his confidence because they weren't "real" books). I just randomly grabbed some books from the library and found a couple that he really loves and that are actually at his level! (most early readers have been too advanced for him) They're Called Ready-To-Read Pre-Level 1. The ones that he's loved are by David Milgrim, they're about a robot named Otto and they're so funny! He's really proud that he can read real books too. The two titles we have read so far are See Otto and See Santa Nap.

I 2nd this! We loved the Nora Gaydos readers and it was what finally got my son interested in trying to read at all. They are colorful, silly and fun to read.
They build on previous words to like this:
The cat is fat.
The fat cat sat.
The fat cat sat on a mat.

They have about 4 different sets now too. I think Sam's Club and Costco might have them.
