3 y/o desperate to read, HELP!!

My 3 y/o is SOOOO curious about words, he has a ton of books but so few of them are 'new reader friendly'

He is doing SO well on his own picking up words (he can recognize about a dozen 3 or 4 letter words)...but I want to help him out a bit more because he truly wants to read so badly.

I would like something that goes deeper into letter sounds, he knows most letter sounds but not all. And something that goes into combining letters (sh, or, er....etc) and what sounds they make when combined.

We do Starfall, but the reading part goes very quickly and seems pretty advanced even for him...but the letter part he knows all of it.

Is there another website (free) with phonics games?

Thanks! :

I did How to teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons. Its not online, but it was super easy for Amethyst to pick up. She was 5 though.

There are tons of "super easy readers" that have like 10-20 different words in each book. Some series of these books feature a different letter of the alphabet (most words starting with that letter) per short book. They're mostly "very poor literature" and he's likely to lose interest in them as soon as he's ready for the next reading level (which might be only a few months later) so I recomend looking for them at your local library rather than purchasing them. Then again, since your DS is only 3, rather than 5 or 6, so he may stay at this stage a while.

Go to the public library and ask the librarian for help- he or she is likely to know specific authors and help you find the appropriate books a lot faster than you'd find them on your own.

Ooh! How about some of the Dr. Seuss books - like Hop on Pop. He won't be ready to tackle all the words, but if he can read a cover or a few pages, he may feel some satisfaction and be willing to take it more slowly. - Lillian

red fish blue fish

put me in the zoo

are you my mother

green eggs and ham --

and try this one

a fly went by -- (Theo looooves it) written in 1958

that whole "eary reader / beggining read" line when when WE were kids. :

I would think the lib would have a lot of them .... (I am not sure which of them are still avaiable new, but Christmas is coming up ... )

Theo loves them, and I was paying attention to them more as i read them recently since i have DH mostly on board to HS, and I want to try to use fun / realk books with the boys as much as i can and not the made up readers --

anyway paying more atention ot them, they do have the same words over and over and the same phrases, and so on -- i do think they'd be pretty easy to start with.

I got some "Fun with i and g" etc books at the library...he was able to read quite a few of the words and is working on sounding them out.

They have the whole line of The * sound book and we picked up a couple of them.

The story is HORRIBLE but the words are in large type, there are good pictures with the words, lots of repeating, lots of rhyming...just a few words that were (IMO) too big for a 3 year old.

James has Green Eggs And Ham memorized...word for word, he can sit down and 'read' it to himself and really only miss a few things. LOL

It was super busy at the library (a school group getting library cards....like 30 kids running around) when I went so I'm going to go back this week and ask the libarian if they have any early phonics/hooked on phonics stuff for him.

I am thinking of hooked on phonics, what are thoughts on this program? SIL has had luck with HOP and 100 Lessons. I was taught just by sitting and reading easy books with my mom. DS is a verry "lessons" type learner, so thats why I am looking for a program.
