filling materials

Thread Starter
I am super confused. I asked my dentist if they use mercury fillings and they said "yes, but..." and said something about resin. I thought resin fillings were the composite fillings that do NOT contain mercury. I called another dentist and asked the same question and she said they use composite fillings with resin materials and they haven't sued amalgan fillings implying that there are only two types (amalgan and composite). Is that true? Help!

amalgam = 50% silver + 50% mercury. "silver colored" fillings

composite resin = tooth colored, mercury free filling (* may contain small amounts of BPA - depends on manufacturer)

Your other options
gold filling - pure gold, $$$
ceramic fillings - $$$
glass ionomer cement - a temp. filling, usually used on kids.
SSC (stainless steel crown) should be very bio-compatible, but it is "silver colored" usually used in kids.

I strongly recommend the composite resin over amalgam. About $80-200 per filling. (same cost as amalgam) If you are OK with a thousand dollars per tooth, go with ceramic fillings - like a movie star.
