I saw something interesting today...

I care for a little one who is 7 months old. She was born with a mild airway malformation and so she has a tracheostomy to breathe through. We have to keep her on a Pulse Oximeter to monitor her oxygen saturation at all times.

She is super active and an absolute cutey pie. Always grinning and smiling.

This morning I went with her parents to her Pediatrician appointment. (I'm really not in a position to say anything about my vaccine views to these parents)

They had all sorts of vaccine propaganda up all over the office. Including a reprint of a full page vaccine ad published by the local children's hospital. It says in GIANT red letters "Immunizations are safe and totally effective. If you love your child have them vaccinated." Then it had a ton of small bulleted points underneath it. :

Well they gave this little one 5 vaccines today. One combo and two seperate.

Her Oxygen sats are always solid as a rock. She sits between 98% and 100% at all times.

This afternoon after the shots she became super tired looking with red rimmed eyes. Her O2 sats wouldn't stay up either. She sat between 90% and 95% all afternoon. We had to put her on oxygen. Then when she was sleeping she kept having apnea spells and her sats would just plummet into the 80s.

It was scary and it made me so sad for her. I know there is no way to know if the vaccines were the cause of her trouble this afternoon. However, it seems way too coincedental.

Wow! I would be so worried to care for this child, following shots. Sounds like too much responsibility/blame on me. Can you mention to the parents how you are concerned because her O2 had never been low like that before? Maybe hint that its just too much for her lil body? I hope you can find a way to bring it up, so you can feel like you tried and so they have no excuse NOT to consider it.

Couldn't they at least limit it to one shot per appt??

Well as much as I would like to bring it up I really cannot. I am with this little one in a healthcare capacity.

It puts me in a really sticky situation when I am bound to care for these little ones but cannot let my personal feelings/beliefs interfere with their care.

I spend nearly every day with this little one for 10 hours a day. I am basically her nanny/nurse all rolled into one.

As much as I want to say something to the parents my agency also holds the belief that "Vaccines are of the utmost importance for the pediatric population."

My own children are partially vaxed and completely vax free. I learned the hard way after my son reacted to vaccines. I went from once being very pro-vax to being on the other side of the fence.

I hope she's on an apnea monitor at night.

Thankfully she has 24 hour nursing. So she should have someone watching her and monitoring her at all times tonight.

I don't vaccinate my child because I love him.

You'd think the parents would question it if her sats went down like that. Sigh. It's sad.

That is a horribly scary thing to deal with. I would be so torn about whether or not to say anything. Could you covertly leave a page of information around somewhere for the parents to find? Or would something like that get you into trouble? Or, maybe look up and see if there is any info on vaccines adversly effecting babies with the health issues that this little one is dealing with? If you could find something that suggests they delay/skip vaxes due to her health problems, that would be a legitmate reason to bring it up as a health professional, I would think...

: If her oxygen levels are always constant where you said, and then a sudden drop after her vaccines, to me that seems like a real concern not you 'pushing your views' on the parents. I would be heart broken if something happened to my daughter one of the times she was vaccinated and no one spoke up when they noticed a correlation when my child was vaccinated prior.
