The Wal-mart thread got me thinking it would be nice to see pure numbers along side the opinions. So here's a poll!

Umm.. I need an other. I do occasionally shop at walmart but I really, really try my darnedest to avoid the place as much as I possibly can for moral reasons - I don't agree with their buisines practices, with their over-arching supply chain, and besides all that, I try my darndest to avoid buying ANYTHING thats made in China, unless there is just no other choice, period... and probably 90% of the stuff in that store is MIC, so....

we dont really have a choice there cheep and we need cheep
post #4 of 48
i shop there, not necessarily all the time for everything, but it is convienient to do one trip to one store sometimes instead of going all over town.

and the overwhelming variety and choice while usually mind boggling and stressful can be enjoyable in the right frame of mind

It's not like the other stores here are any better than WalMart. STill, I do avoid them for the anti birthcontrol stance around the nation.

I shop there about once every 4 months, for things like Benadryl, menstrual stuff, etc.

we usualy get things like cat food, toothpaste, husbands socks and boxers, kids socks stuff like that

I once shopped there, but only because it was literally the only place to buy things in my very small county without going 12 different places, 1/2 of which were not open on weekends. I last made a purchase there 13 months ago. It really makes my head spin when I go in there-- I run into other shoppers all the time, and feel really uncomfortable.

Yes. We live in small Texas town that has a grocery store and a small Wmart and I would have to drive 75 miles one way to shop elsewhere.
I voted no for moral/political reasons, but I wanted to vote for other reasons as well.

When I have gone to Walmart, I have not found their prices to be good. Two examples, a princess doll my daughter wanted was 11.94 at the grocery store and 17.94 at Walmart. A See and Say was 12.84 at the grocery store and 19 something at Walmart! Unreal.

I also find the stores grimy and dirty, huge lines, crazy parking lot, etc, so it is a completely unpleasant shopping situation, so I doubt I would shop there even if I didn't have political/moral objections.

Yes.
I have no moral objection to them, simply because I am poor and they make my life easier. Sorry if that offends anyone.

However, I am under strict orders from DH "never to go to the local WM alone" because of where it is -- he thinks I'll get raped/mugged. :

So usually I go to Target, unless I'm visiting my grandma at work. Because she works at one.
I do not when we are home except if I am looking for something specific and cannot find it elsewhere...then I'll try there.

However, when we go visit and stay with my mom, I do-as it's really the only option. They have a very clean, not scary store though...and the one around here is as well, so I don't think they are all gross & dirty.
I only shop there once in a blue moon. I think the one near me is grody and the Target is only five minutes further drive, so it's easy enough to avoid WM.

I did buy some plants there this summer. But I figured they weren't MIC.
No. I try to avoid big box stores if I possibly can, first of all. If I HAVE to go to one, I go to my mom's Costco (good labor practices, most of their storebrand stuff made in USA) or if I'm really desperate I might go to Target (only slightly better than Walmart, but still better.) I despise Walmart, for its labor practices and the influence it has had on the breakdown of smalltown American. And finally, I was in our Walmart once, and it was a dirty, seedy store that was all disorganized and the staff was WAY unfriendly and seemed hassled and harassed. My DH's union and my stepfather's union both boycott Walmart and Sam's, and we participate.
I couldn't vote accurately. I would have voted for the last two choices...both of them reflect the reasons I don't shop there. Although I might go in once every 2yrs or so or if I was shopping with a senior that wanted to.
Nope, we don't shop there anymore. We have been there once in the last 5 years. That was when we were out of state and had a medical situation that we needed something for in the middle of the night. We had no idea where else to go.

The list of reasons is long, but the top reason is their business practices. Other reasons include the fact that they are filthy and you take your life in your hands trying to make it from the car to the door and back.

The movie "The High Cost of Low Prices" talks about the rampant issues with outdoor security that Walmart has. The film also mentioned that some muggers/rapists specifically choose Walmart parking lots to find victims because they know that the parking lot security is nearly non-existent.

I used to shop there when my kids were really little. There is one near my house and being a poor single mom I guess I just sort of fell for their marketing while deluding myself that I was thinking for myself. I was convinced that it was the only place I could really afford to shop.

But in reality, I save money by not shopping there. And I have less clutter. I found it next to impossible not to come out with at least one thing not on my list. "useful" things or something that just seemed too good a deal to pass up (like DVDs for $5.00). Maybe a candy for the kids. SOMETHING. every damn time. Now I buy less stuff and what I do buy is better quality. Also it takes more effort to go to other places because wallmart is the closest store to me and it has a little bit of everything it seems. So I need to make my shopping trips efficient rather than spontaneous, which in turn, helps me stick to what I actually need.

I go to the Walmart near my home rarely. I don't like the things I've heard here at MDC about Walmart and I like to support the smaller stores when possible.

BTW - I didn't vote since none of the answers fit for me. I need an other or a sometimes option.
