How do you clean your coffee maker?

I wash everything removable either via dishwasher or by hand. My husband feels we should be cleaning the inside – possibly run through vinegar? I have run the maker w/plain water hoping the hot water will clean it.

we do the vinegar when we buy a new machine, or if the pot gets really dirty. We haven't done it since changing to a Bunn. The old style coffee makers I would steam with vinegar (open the windows, run the vinegar through the machine; then follow with pure water until it doesn't smell anymore) once every 6months or so.

I really love my high altitude Bunn.

I do the vinegar thing. http://www.ehow.com/how_3148_clean-coffeemaker.html

You may need to cycle water through the coffee maker a couple times to get the vinegar completely out.

We use plain water and rinse off after each use. Thank goodness for stove top espresso makers. They make delicious coffee and don't require much maintenance.

We had ants invade our coffee maker earlier in the summer (it was stored away, and then DH suddenly started drinking coffee again.) The vinegar cleaning worked great to get all of those little ants out of it. I ran it through about 10 times with clean water afterwards to clear away the last remains. There was no way I was going to replace the coffee maker that we use so seldom!

Last week my dh unplugged the coffee maker, filled the sink with hot water and added a glug of bleach and put the entire thing right in. He took the pot off and added that separately. Shrug. It soaked there for a few hours, he put it back together and now it looks new & is back in action. I figured you couldn't dunk it like that, but he's the electrical genius and it's fine. Go figure.

eta - we have the kind of coffee maker that uses the insulated pot, not the heating plate at the bottom. Maybe that's why it was okay.

Vinegar here as well and it stays so nice and clean.
We do 1 cup of vinegar and then add 6 cups water, run it thru then run just water thru a few times to rinse it clean.
