Poop explosion - is this normal??

Ok I have to ask!!

I went to change my baby's diaper today and when I undressed her, I saw poo everywhere!!! It was up to her armpits... the whole diaper was full and really, she was covered in it. Gave her a bath and everything's ok, she seems perfectly happy, but... is something wrong or is this normal??

It was really a LOT of poop...
I had noticed the last day or so, when I changed her nappy there was usually only a small bit of poo and I was wondering where the rest was
well I guess it all came out at once...

I just have *no* experience with babies so I don't know what is ok and what should worry me...

Context: she's two weeks old and I breastfeed her exclusively.

She was in a disposable diaper cause I'm washing all my cloth ones, I wonder if the cloth ones would have absorbed more or if it would have been an even bigger blowout...

I hope I'm posting in the right forum...
Thanks in advance for any answers!

ETA: it had only been about 2 hours since I last changed her, 3 max

Oh yes, totally normal. At least for an ebf babe.

We called it "exploding baby" in our house.

Often it necessitated changing the diaper, the baby's clothing, mom or dad's clothing, and sometimes our whole bed or whatever else she had been sitting on.

Congrats on your new addition and welcome to one of the many joys of parenthood!

ETA: We were so amused by this phenomenon as new parents that we actually have a picture of one of dd1's "epic" poops. :

Aili loved to surprise us with poo-splosions. There was one that was still flowing out of the top of her diaper like bright yellow lava when I was changing her! It was definitely a two-man job to clean up.

Your post makes me laugh!!! Totally reminds me of when our daughter was younger...wow, we had soooooo many of those!!! When we switched over to cloth diapers, those all stopped. But yes, totally normal! Welcome to mommyhood:

We call them epic here too. Either that or poop-tacular!

Cloth helps limit the leakage here too. There's still a ton of poop, but at least the cover contains it better than the sposie. I've had DD in sposies for a few days to clear a yeast rash while I stripped and sanitized our cloth and we've had 2 epic poops that got on everything. I hate sposies.

oh yes, dd had these too, quite often when dh was changing her. We called them her explosive poops, they would literally shoot a foot and a half away. She also had a knack of doing it right when dh would wipe her, it would shoot all the way up his arm. I couldn't contain myself when it happened.

As everyone has said, it's normal.

And we found, after realizing that it almost never happened when I had diapered DS previously, and often when hubby had, that it happened more often when the diaper was done up too tightly. Hubby liked to make the dipe snug, and it seemed to cause the force needed for an explosion. While my more loosely-done dipes didn't cause the force needed for that to happen. So you might try loosening the dipe a little bit.

Just adding a lol because of the title of the thread.. brings back memories

Poop-splosions! We only had bad ones on vacation with the disposables. It was awful, E needed to be hosed down after one.

At home the poops are better contained in the cloth. Our "explosions" constitute a little leak out the the leg holes and that it is it.

Welcome to motherhood!

yeah, they are great arnt they : All you can do is just give a bath, 'cause no amount of wipes is going to clean up the the pooptastic pooslotion!

LMAO I love how everyone has their own terms for this "phenomenon"

Thanks again for reassuring me.

Eeew, thanks for the reminder, I think I had finally managed to block out the poop-explosion mental pictures.

Now just wait for the first time you get the fun of projectile poop...

The poop fountains are definitely something to behold. My niece holds the record in our family, having once shot a stream of poop 6+ feet across the room. Yes, we are looking forward to mortifying her as a teenager .
