Brier was born last night (9/12) at home at 10:45pm. 8lbs, 12oz, 22" long. He's prefect and I feel great.
The story of his birth is so uneventful it's almost not worth telling. Friday DH and I went out for our regular weekly lunch date, and then returned to work. I had a few fairly strong contractions throughout lunch, and told DH to be on the lookout for a call from me. At 1:40pm I started timing my contractions, and an hour later called my midwife just to let her know Brier was probably coming tonight. DH and I headed home around 3:30pm and we went for a walk around our neighborhood in the lovely sunshine. We got home, played outside with the kids a little, and called the midwife to come.
The midwife and her assistant arrived at around 5:30pm. We ordered in pizza and hung out answering the questions from Trivia Pursuit cards between contractions. As the contractions got more intense, our nanny took the kids out to play for an hour and shortly before they returned, at, say, 8pm, I crawled upstairs to the guest bedroom. DH had set it up with candles and soft music; it was lovely, relaxing, and I got a little bit of a break.
By 9pm I was probably pretty close to complete, but a little scared to actually deliver the baby. The second stage of my labor with Cale and Dillon was 7 minutes total -- to deliver TWO babies. I really wanted this to be less intense. So I lay on my left side and took it as easy as I could. Eventually, though, I realized I had to embrase the intensity somewhat to actually get this baby out, and when I was sick of dealing with the discomfort of the contractions I started pushing in earnest. He started descending, my water broke, and then the rest of delivery went very quickly. It was such a relief to have that little creature out of me and on my belly.
Brier was born at a convenient time -- the midwife and her assitant tiptoed out after straightening up and we settled in for a pretty solid night's sleep. His brothers were so excited to wake up and meet him in the morning. I didn't tear, and pretty much feel perfect. Brier's nursing well, and doesn't want to leave my breast.
Yay!
