a question on sewing a wool cover

I have a wool shirt that I want to turn into a wool cover/longies, but I don't have a serger. Is there any other way to sew the edges so they don't fray? TIA:

I think many people felt sweaters/shirts so that the fibers interlock and can be cut without unravelling. However, if your shirt is already small, then I wouldn't risk shrinking it beyond usability for the project you're doing. I would just use a zig-zag or overlock stitch right on your machine, very close to the edge. I've been doing it a lot recently! Works just fine, no serger needed.

ditto pp. i zig zag it as well and plus wool covers are to be handwashed so there is very little worry about fraying.

felted wool though is thick..mine is..so i hv to use size 18 needle
