My AC stinks!

Any ideas? My through-wall unit AC smells terrible when it's on! Sort of like a cross between toe cheese and dead something or other. Gross! When it's on fan-only mode it does not smell. I don't see any problems with the filter.

What can I do?

nak...
hubby is ac tech. change your air filter. if that doesn't work u might need to call someone to clean the drain pan. you might have something that crawled in the outside unit and died and bringing the smell throuh the vents. dh has found some disgusting things in there.

Oh man, I bet it's the drain pan...I'm fastidious about the filter, so it's not that. Is the pan something I can do myself? It's a through-wall unit...

talked to dh. he suggested call someone to clean the unit. sometimes there's algae and mildew buildup on the evaporater coils and in drain pan. he says they call it "dirty sock syndrome".hehe i wouldn't suggest cleaning it yourself. i know it takes dh 3 hrs to clean a unit. in our area it would cost about $400 just to give you an idea on the cost.
