New to Oklahoma

My family of 10 will be moving from Australia to Oklahoma in July of next year. Im not familiar with the area, but we will be 30 minutes north of OKC, in Edmond. These are my questions...

1) Can anybody reccomend a non-vaxing, pro-BF'ing, more natural ped or maybe even a naturopath?

2) Can anybody reccomend a homeschooling group or organization?

THanks in advance for anybodys advice. I will be moving really close to my dh family, who are pro-medicine, anti-bf'ing and just in general non crunchy, so Im a bit nervous. I have 8 kids and am pretty strong minded, but with lack of support I dont do really well.

Are there really not any Okie moms on MDC??

Maybe I should post in the HS forum.... I did find a HS yahoo group for Ok, so I joined that.

I was just really hoping to find some mdc moms to connect with.

Don't worry, there are Okie MDC moms, not a lot of us but we are here.

I have a great ped, but she is in Downtown OKC (where we live). She's very open to your wants but still a traditional pediatrician. Her name is Dr. Julie Morrow and she is with Saints Medical Group.

As far as homeschool, I'm sorry but my little one(s) are not old enough for school yet so I'm of NO help.

Sorry I'm not much help but I hope you are happy here in OK. And don't despair, there are like minded mommas here for you to communicate with!

Best Wishes!

Thank you! I was just dissapointed. Some of the tribes are so big, but not much action for Ok! When Im in other threads I will have to pay attention to where people are from!

Thanks!

welcome to OK!

I don't have much advice for you as I am currently looking for a Ped myself. My wonderful ped changed her practice to a different field. :
Like the previous poster, my DS is still too young for school. No help there either! I'm sorry!
I just wanted to say HI and let you know that there ARE a few of us online.

Hello!

We use Kelly Stephens over at Mercy for a pediatrician. We dont' vax and he doesn't give us any grief over it.
There is a good homeschooling group in Shawnee. I can find out some more info for you if you would like. My kids aren't old enough for school.
Also if you need to get some housing info I can get that for you too. I'm a realtor.

Thanks for the info. Is Mercy the hospital? Thanks for the offer on housing, but we are actually moving into my in-laws old farm house! We'll see how long that will last living next door to in-laws!

Yeah...Mercy Hospital. Actually we see him in the Mercy outpatient clinic, though, not the hospital. This little clinic is off Memorial.
He's pretty good. He's got some weird ideas, but is pro bfing and didn't give me crap about not vaxing.

Hey, our family of 8 lives in Edmond! It's a nice area, lots of activities to choose from for homeschooling families.

We actually see a GP who isn't exactly pro-BF and nonvax, but doesn't give me any grief about it either. I prefer to see his nurse practitioner when we need to go in. She's very thorough and will definitely leave the decision up to me.

There are 2 pretty large homeschool groups in this immediate area and I'm sure there are several smaller ones, too. The big ones are EFL -Educating For Life and EHE - Edmond Home Educators.

I would be happy to answer any other questions you might have about the area! You can PM me if you want to. I don't get on the boards very often.

Edmond is definately the place to be for homeschool groups. I'm not in that area, but know quite a few that are. As for dr rec.. still looking... I've been to Morrow for an interview and she was snotty to me. Stephens is highly recommended, but we are doing fine w/o a ped right now so haven't gotten around to him yet. I've also heard Adair and Maschino are willing to overlook nonvax. The only prononvax dr we had moved to TX in january

I almost NEVER check this forum, so I hope I'm not too late to post.

We're a family of nine (one on the way even) and we live in Norman (south of OKC) We have a great ped in Norman, Dr Victor Wilson, who is very tolerant of our alternative choices (no vax, he discourages circ and antibiotics) and is still very wonderful with kids. His PA homeschools and is very friendly, as are the nurses.

We also have a very LARGE homeschool organization called Norman Area Home Educators, or NAHE, although since we unschool I tend to stick with FYI-OKC...funschooling young individuals in OKC.

I'll definitely sub to this so I see if you post again. Again, sorry for not being more up to date on the forums!

Victor Wilson would have been my second choice.
Also wanted to add that Stephens doesn't dole out antibiotics for every little booger either. Both of these docs are good choices.

Teehee, it does seem like no one posts here. I have to admit, I forget to check it because my other fav forums are much busier! Which reminds me, on Friday, the Myriad Garden will have free entry due to being the first day of their orchid sale.

We'll be there, huge family in tow.

Oh - thanks for sharing!

Well, I was bumping because the OP is going to be moving to my town! I didn't know if she saw that or not. It would be nice to already know someone when you move to a new place!

Another Dr. Stephens Fan..

I have never posted on this forum before, just lurked off and on, however when we lived in Edmond we also used Dr. Stephens.
Here is a link to his website if that is OK to post. Just thought it might be helpful to the OP to see a link to his handouts and what you might expect from him.

I am in Edmond too! We also go to Dr. Stephens, we just moved here in Jan so haven't been in a lot, but I have a 12 week old and they have been great about the vax schedule I have chosen and were supportive about no circ. I would definitely recommend him! Hope you enjoy it here in OK!

Hi all I'm a newbie here, but I wanted to add that we use Dr. Adair at Mercy in the physicians building and she's been pretty good. She didn't give me much crap when I said I wanted to stop vaxing, she told me she didn't agree with my decision, but it was my decision and it was up to me. That was that. She's still been perfectly friendly and helpful at DD's visits and she's really a very pleasant, nice person. She kind of seems like a fun aunt (IMO), haha.
