5 year old boy what stuff does he like

My twins are coming up on birthdays. Every year I buy them things I think they'll enjoy and it seems like I have more misses than hits in what they end up playing with.

Can you give me some ideas of what your 5 year old boys most enjoy?

I have twin boys too! They turned 5 this past June. If I got rid of every other toy they had, but kept the following, they'd be thrilled. Magna Tiles, hot wheels/matchbox cars, trains, tracks to go with cars and trains, and tools. They really like any kind of vehicle, big or small.

When my son was 5 he liked:

-legos
-playmobil knights
-leapster
-matchbox cars

What have they liked in the past? My ds has always had pretty specific tastes. Maybe if we knew what they liked, we'd be able to figure out what other things they'd like.

DS just turned five yesterday! He got lots of sports equipment (baseball glove and bat and a bag of whiffle balls, soccer ball, etc), Playmobil (he requested the police station), some superhero figures and bad guys, and a Hotwheels race track:

Plus some games and a bike. Honestly, he spends most of his time playing with his action figures/ Playmobil. Next is Magnatiles and Hot Wheels type cars. He LOVES video games, but we only allow them on the weekends.

Oh, his personalized cape is another favorite:

I agree with a PP, though. Are they arts and crafts types? Do they like to dress up and be the characters themselves? Or do they prefer action figure-type play?

Good luck!

Well, right now they play a lot with matchbox, trains, and anything wheeled. One kiddo will play pretend with anything--give him a clothespin or two and he's thrilled. So he's really imaginative and likes to play pretend stuff. They do play with the legos duplo blocks. We read books.

Do they have any books on CD? DS really enjoys those. His favorites are The Mouse and the Motorcycle and anything by Jim Weiss.

So vehicles and building. Hmmm...if I think of anything else I'll be back.

They might love Woodyclick, sort of a combo between brio and legos. The vehicles can be taken apart and put together in different ways.

Maybe they would be ready for little legos.

Maybe some new components for their train set (do they have a wood one? My ds loves the brio station which lets you make short recordings and wishes he had tracks with switches).

Marble run? Just the plastic kind is nice. Easy to put together. The marbles run on a "track" like a train or hotwheels.

LEGO, Playmobile pirate stuff (ds loves his treasure chest), or a bike/scooter

My DS (fifth of six) will be 5 next month. He just discovered that, of all things, he loves needle felting!

Quick rocket kits...baking soda and vinegar, etc.

Other can't-miss things: Knights, castles, dragons in any shape or size.

Puppets and a doorway puppet theatre.

Costumes/dress-up!!

Books on CD. Someone already recommended Jim Weiss, and I can't second that enough. We have fifteen of his CDs. The soon-to-be-five-year-old is entranced by Galileo because of Jim Weiss' retellings of the story of Galileo's life!

Can he/they read alone? If so, Magic Tree House books and Magic School Bus books.

Puzzles! My 4yo is deeply in love with his big (BIG) puzzles...the ones with huge pieces that end up being 3 feet tall when you've put them together. Buzz Lightyear, Scooby, Dinosaurs, the Solar system...he has quite a few.

UNO!

Stratego...even more awesome since they can play each other. My guys love the LOTR Stratego, but they have LOTR nutty older sisters.

The Hobbit and The Hobbit on CD.

Does your pretend-play-loving kid have a play kitchen or stove? Wooden cutting food and a small "market basket" are a really great cheap imagination tool.

Origami was a favorite of my girls at this age, and my two boys (7 and almost 5) love paper plane folding and making useful origami (like paper cups and boxes).

Non-hardening clay (you can buy it in huge boxes at Michael's but I can't remember the name of the kind we have...we got it at yardsale) is a winner all the time.

Those "fake snow" play kits, and you can even buy just the snow stuff at craft stores like Michaels.

COSTUMES!! Anything dress-up, and the bonus is that things like shields, crowns, etc last far beyond big growth spurts.

Jump ropes, yo-yos, jacks, marbles.
