I just went and reviewed Dr. Stephanie Cave's book, and while it was written in 2001, I will go ahead and share some of the relevant points. Please feel free to update with more recent info if it is available.
Killed, or Inactivated, Vaccines
An inactivated vaccine consists of all or parts of the disease-causing organism that has been killed or rendered inactive. Unlike live vaccines, killed vaccines cannot reproduce, so they are not able to cause the disease they are designed to prevent. They trigger a weakder response by the immune system then do live vaccines. They aslo tend to be safter than live vaccines for people who have a weakened immune system, for pregnant women, and for children younger than one year.(p10)
The Flu Vaccine
Flu vaccines - inactivated - are prepared form the fluids of chick embroys that are inoculated (injected) with specfic types of influenza virus. Manufacturers then add formaldehyde to inactivate the virus and thimerosal to preserve the vaccine. (p225)
Who should not get the flu vaccine?
In the past, pregnant women were advised not to get the flue vaccine, but the ACIP now reccomnds the vaccine only for women who are more than fourteen weeks into their pregnancy. The vaccine manufacturer, however, states in its product information that it is "not known whether influencza virus vaccine can cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman." (p227)
Until the thimerosol is removed from the flue vaccine, I have concerns about it safety. I believe the ethylmercury in the vaccine can cause neurological or immue system problems for anyone who gets the shot, especially the elderly, and I think it is unsafe to give to pregnant women during any stage of pregnancy (p228).
She got a very bad case of the flu while she was pregnant with my sister. She was sick during the time that my sister's kidneys were developing. Very sadly, my sister's kidney development was very much hindered and she was born with very under-developed kidneys. She was sick and in and out of hospitals until she died at 6 months old. (Edit: Just to clarify, my mom went through extensive genetic testing before ttc again, and it was confirmed that it was because of the flu.)
|I mean, it's just the flu. I am healthy and fairly young, I doubt the flu would seriously adversly effect me... even while pregnant.|
Sorry but that is total bunk imho. They can say that until they are blue in the face but the reality is my dh has gotten the flu from the vaccine ten years running. High fever and the lot he has even gone into the doctor and they tell him he has the flu! Even killed virus vaccines have a certain small percentage of live bugs in them.
Also they list fever aches as side effects maybe I'm stupid but isn't that the flu?
New study claims if you get a flu vaccine while pg, you will protect your baby from the flu for 6 months after birth.
