We started ECing a few weeks in with DS, using diaper backup. I'm planning on grabbing some Indian pre-folds and (hope) to knit some soakers.

I'm ECing with a Liam too! We started around 4 months old and all poops are caught in the potty at this point, which makes my life a lot easier in terms of diaper changing.

It sounds like you guys are doing great!
I've really enjoyed it, and there was no way we couldn't have done it (he'd fuss at night and hold off peeing till the last possible moment). There is definitely a lot to the communication. He's been dry at night since 14 months or so (although very few misses at night before that). We are still not 100% dry every day at almost 3 (which surprised me). Progress every day ![]() |

It really is a lot easier than it seems at first, huh? DS was the same way about holding it, he woke up around midnight last night while we were still up because he had to poop, which is really out of ordinary for him but I think it may have to do with milk changes. We're not dry every day either but I figure we're making progress as long as we're catching some of them.

Although last time they confused me a bit (fitted or aio? pocket or cover?) A definite staple is preemie prefolds with nb proraps. I want to get some newborn wool too. I'm in the middle of knitting some longies right now. The pattern is for preemie sized, so I'm hoping it fits at least in the beginning? I figure, my almost 9 lber was swimming in newborn clothes at first, and could wear preemie outfits! (not for long..lol) But mostly I'm doing a preemie pattern because I couldn't find any newborn longie patterns that aren't knitted in the round :/
I want to be able to wash every 3 days. I was thinking of getting 32 white chinese prefolds, 4 snappis, and the pail and all that. From there I'm lost! I was thinking about doing the thirsties covers. They seem to have pretty good reviews and I love all the colors. I'm not sure how many or what size to get or how many. In my head I was thinking 6 of the xs ones since it says that's for 6-12 pound babies. Would that be okay to start out with? I don't really want to buy all the sizes immediately. Then I got lured by the kissaluvs but they are so expensive! I definitely don't think we could solely use those or rather I wouldn't want to spend that much and hate them. I was considering buying a few to see how we like them? I'm just trying to get in my mind a good 'starter kit' for us.

Sounds like you have a very good start Madalyn! I used preemie prefolds for the first week or two with my 7#4oz'er and then went to infant. I found proraps covers to be VERY effective at holding in that newborn poop (and they are cheap. Although I may buy some thirsties too for the colors.
I think 6 covers might be good for the NB phase and then less as they get bigger. You really only need to have 2 or 3 in rotation a day because you air out the cover in between changings and reuse it for the next one (unless you get poo on it) kissaluv 0's are great for the nb phase because of the snap down front. I bought size 1's and never really got into them because by the time he fit into them he was a super soaker and they don't really hold big pees well. I will probably get 6 kl0's to round out my prefold stash. They are really cheap in comparison to a lot of other fitteds. Oh, I used Bummi's super whisper wraps with my prefolds for a bit but I didn't like them because they didn't have gussets. Did I mention I love gussets? ![]() |
He's big into his astronomy.

Yeah, I would say get 6 newborn covers. Try 2 proraps, 2 thirsties, 1 bummi (that is a cute print I had that and froggies- BUT the new super brite has GUSSETS! Yes, I'll try it!) and 1 cotton style (imse vimse or litewrap) That will give you a good variance and you can decide what you like and buy more of them for the smalls. (sounded like you wanted some specific direction, not trying to tell you what to do!)
The best thing is you can sell off the ones you don't like to buy the ones you do like! |

but other than that, we're covered!
