The official May babies in Cloth thread! - Page 3

We started ECing a few weeks in with DS, using diaper backup. I'm planning on grabbing some Indian pre-folds and (hope) to knit some soakers.

What a great thread!! This will be my 4th cloth diaper baby (and my 4th baby!). I didn't start with cloth until 4 weeks old with my first, 3 weeks with the second, and 5 days old with the 3rd. I'm planning to start right from the start this time! I like to use fitteds and have had good luck with Mother Ease Air Flow covers, but also just started using wool on my 21 month old. One of the first things that I thought when I found out I was pregnant was "I get to buy more diapers!!!", followed by "I get to wear a newborn in my Moby!!".

I'm glad it helped. If I could recommend one it would be Planet concentrate, it's normally for HE machines but I've used it with regular machines and it works fantastic. Despite being kind of pricey, hardly any needs to be used and I've never had buildup with it, we use it with all of our clothing as well.

I'm ECing with a Liam too! We started around 4 months old and all poops are caught in the potty at this point, which makes my life a lot easier in terms of diaper changing.

It sounds like you guys are doing great!

I've really enjoyed it, and there was no way we couldn't have done it (he'd fuss at night and hold off peeing till the last possible moment). There is definitely a lot to the communication. He's been dry at night since 14 months or so (although very few misses at night before that). We are still not 100% dry every day at almost 3 (which surprised me). Progress every day

It really is a lot easier than it seems at first, huh? DS was the same way about holding it, he woke up around midnight last night while we were still up because he had to poop, which is really out of ordinary for him but I think it may have to do with milk changes. We're not dry every day either but I figure we're making progress as long as we're catching some of them.

Absolutely! I think if I am listening and giving him opportunities, I am doing my part. At this stage it's still hard to stop playing to make time for the potty

What a great thread! My youngest will be almost 5 when this baby is born, so it has been a little while since I have been cloth obsessed! Can't wait to read about the current latest and greatest in the diapering world!

I am so excited to cd a newborn again! Last time I was so new at dipes (not to mention life with a newborn) that I don't think I had as much fun with it as I could have. A very sweet friend passed on a bunch of her dd's old nb/small dipes/covers, ALL wahm made! So I have some fun stuff for tiny babies Although last time they confused me a bit (fitted or aio? pocket or cover?) A definite staple is preemie prefolds with nb proraps. I want to get some newborn wool too. I'm in the middle of knitting some longies right now. The pattern is for preemie sized, so I'm hoping it fits at least in the beginning? I figure, my almost 9 lber was swimming in newborn clothes at first, and could wear preemie outfits! (not for long..lol) But mostly I'm doing a preemie pattern because I couldn't find any newborn longie patterns that aren't knitted in the round :/

Okay I feel like I have been reading about cloth diapering ALL DAY and I feel so overwhelmed!! I'm trying to get in my mind what I'd like to buy so we can gradually purchase everything over the next 9 months. I want to be able to wash every 3 days. I was thinking of getting 32 white chinese prefolds, 4 snappis, and the pail and all that. From there I'm lost! I was thinking about doing the thirsties covers. They seem to have pretty good reviews and I love all the colors. I'm not sure how many or what size to get or how many. In my head I was thinking 6 of the xs ones since it says that's for 6-12 pound babies. Would that be okay to start out with? I don't really want to buy all the sizes immediately. Then I got lured by the kissaluvs but they are so expensive! I definitely don't think we could solely use those or rather I wouldn't want to spend that much and hate them. I was considering buying a few to see how we like them? I'm just trying to get in my mind a good 'starter kit' for us.

My husband is on board for the whole cloth diapering thing but he's wary how it would work out at the hospital and feels like we should buy a pack of disposables for that. He says he doesn't want to be hanging onto 2 days worth of dirty diapers. How did you all work out doing cloth while at the hospital or did you not?

Sorry for all the newbie questions!!

The hospital will provide sposies for you so if you don't use cloth there, you don't need to worry about buying them. We used cloth in the hospital. it really wasn't any different from using them at home, except we had to bring the bag full of dirty dipes home and wash them. It really wasn't a big deal at all. It was kinda funny that any time a nurse would put a diaper on, the cover would be inside out and backwards, and they'd WAY over complicate the prefold.

Sounds like you have a very good start Madalyn! I used preemie prefolds for the first week or two with my 7#4oz'er and then went to infant. I found proraps covers to be VERY effective at holding in that newborn poop (and they are cheap. Although I may buy some thirsties too for the colors.

I think 6 covers might be good for the NB phase and then less as they get bigger. You really only need to have 2 or 3 in rotation a day because you air out the cover in between changings and reuse it for the next one (unless you get poo on it)

kissaluv 0's are great for the nb phase because of the snap down front. I bought size 1's and never really got into them because by the time he fit into them he was a super soaker and they don't really hold big pees well. I will probably get 6 kl0's to round out my prefold stash. They are really cheap in comparison to a lot of other fitteds.

Oh, I used Bummi's super whisper wraps with my prefolds for a bit but I didn't like them because they didn't have gussets. Did I mention I love gussets?

Reading I have a good start might be the best thing I've heard all day because I've felt so lost in all this! Of course I'm over analyzing when you say 6 might be good do you mean I should buy more, less or a different amount of sizes? I don't know why I'm so freaked about this cover thing lol.

My hubby loved the star baby bummi print so I might just get that one for fun for him. He's big into his astronomy.

Yeah, I would say get 6 newborn covers. Try 2 proraps, 2 thirsties, 1 bummi (that is a cute print I had that and froggies- BUT the new super brite has GUSSETS! Yes, I'll try it!) and 1 cotton style (imse vimse or litewrap) That will give you a good variance and you can decide what you like and buy more of them for the smalls. (sounded like you wanted some specific direction, not trying to tell you what to do!)

The best thing is you can sell off the ones you don't like to buy the ones you do like!

That does sound like a good idea mixing them up instead of just one brand. Especially since so many of the products you see get 5 stars by one person then another person gives it only 1.

Where do you sell them at? Here or another site?

We will be using cloth with this new babe. It will be our first time CD as with our DS (7yrs ago) I didn't know about it. I'll probably do prefolds from GMD in the begining and then figure it out as the babe gets older.

I'm not in the DDC but I can't resist a thread that MIGHT involve some discussion of wool soakers, so!

Madalyn - I tried a while ago (like when we first started TTC and I was sure I'd be preggers soon) to sort through the cloth diaper maze and didn't really get too far, but: I found a site, called Jillian's Drawers, that does kind of a test-run for diaper stuff. I have no idea if it'd get you through 3 days or not, but here's the link:
http://www.jilliansdrawers.com/cdcm.html

I've stopped trying to nail down what all we'll want to have on hand, because I don't want to jinx anything. :P

This is a great thread.... Im excited to get out my Kissaluvs 0's again but I think I'll need to get some new covers I got rid of most of the ones I had.

DD was in cd's at birth (7lbs 2oz) and the only covers that worked for her skinny little legs were Thirsties XS. we tried premie sizes in several, but none of them worked for her!

she's still in thirsties now (between small and medium at 22 lbs) and a combination of kissaluvs fitteds, unbleached organic cotton prefolds and thirsties pocket AIO w/ thirsties hemp doublers.

thirsties XS have a notch cut out for the umbilical cord, which was nice

i'll probably have to replace some of the velcro from her old covers, and if we have a boy, i'm sure i'll buy some different colors to match outfits but other than that, we're covered!
