Sulphur Water/ water softener questions

We're moving into our new house in a few days, and we just recently got the water turned on. When we ran water to clean up the place, we noticed a very strong sulphur odor. It is in a rural area but is hooked up to county water (i.e. not a well). How likely is it that the sulphur smell will dissipate as we use more water? Is it from sitting in the line unused for so long? The house has been built for a while but has never had water running through the pipes before now. Is it more likely that this is "hard" water and if so is there something we can buy to make it less stinky? I'd hate to think of taking showers in that and smelling like sulphur all the time. Ick!

So, anyone know anything about water softeners or other solutions to my stinky water problem?

Am I doomed to stinkage in my new house?

We have a sulfur smell in our water. We had it tested and was told that there was a lot of iron in the water, which was causing the odor. There are systems of some sort you can buy to solve the problem... I don't remember too much about them, but if you PM me a reminder, I can ask my husband.

I'd knock on some doors in the area and get to know the "neighbors" and ask them. Someone has to have a solution!

We have heavy calcium deposits in our water and our water smells faintly like chlorine after vacations. We have a Reverse Osmosis system for drinking water and the chlorine smell goes away as the water is used normally.

We have a well and very sulphur water... to the point that it was making me ill, the smell.. We went with a whole house filter that helps keep the smell to a minimum.. there are times a year where it's more smelly.. usually if we dont' get rain for a while.

We also have a softener.. and it didn't help with the smell..

I have very hard water and it doesn't smell.

I also recommend asking your neighbours. That's what I had to do as I had never lived with hard water and hadn't a clue how best to clean.

Did you know about the water before you placed a bid on the house? I'm pretty sure they are required to inform you of any water quality issues...

A softener won't help with the smell or removing anything from the water.

If it's iron causing it, you can get an iron & rust remover put on the line before the water tank that will remove some of it.
