Random yarns stashbuster idea needed!!

I have quite a bit of random wool, mostly worsted, and I desparately need to let go of it. Problem is, I truly love it all, and I would love to make something great from it.

Just not sure what....

DH and I have had an ongoing discussion about my yarn "habit", and we came to a compromise:

I can either make something fabulous for the family from it,

OR

sell, donate, freecycle it all.

WWYD?
WWYknit??

Help!!

Isn't everything you make fabulous and for the family? :

Drat, sorry, hit reply too soon.

There's more, but you get the general idea. I see an afghan in your future- or, of course, a knit sports car...

ETA- just looked at your stash on ravelry, and I can see his point. Sweater quantities of four yarns is kind of overkill... I think you should add cozy to the list too.

Good question. My mom just bestowed her fabulous stash to me. I'm looking for ideas...

If it's all the same gauge, you could make a killer log cabin blanket from it. You could even make an extra bulky one by doubling the strands. Go to google, click on images (on the top) and use "log cabin blanket" as your search term.

ETA - you could do the same search on Ravelry... I see that others have beat me to the punch on blankets!

At first I was completely clueless as to what I had in my stash...haven't actually photographed my true stash yet. Then, I went over and looked...! That was from last year, pre-holidays. It is all knitted up now. So, as of today, my stash is much more hodge podge. If you visit my blog and scroll down past my most recent WIPs, you'll see my storage cubes. That is my "organized" collection. The space bag is mostly scraps.

Are you wanting to use most of the yarn on one single project? A few projects? I'm thinking a bunch of felted things, like felted mocs for the whole family? Fiber Trends or LTK, for example.

This thread, of course, sent me on a bit of a Ravelry rampage. That always leads to tons more projects in the queue and the idea that I MUST buy more yarn. Ack! But, I too, need to stash bust. How about a lengthwise scarf. Seems many of them are terrific for using random amounts of thick yarns. I'm thinking of doing one double stranded, even. Yummy thick warmth as winter comes? I think it's also the kind of project that you can just pick up whenever you feel like....knit bits here and there.

Let us know what else you find!

How about Hudson hats for everyone in your family and everyone else you know? Of course, this is assuming you live somewhere cold enough to need a hat.

I like the blanket idea in theory, but I could never knit a blanket. It would take me forever--I would get hung up on the fact that I could never possibly finish and I wouldn't work on it. Hats--well, they go fast. I like knitting hats .

I am a big fan of stripey hats. They are fast and fun. Everybody loves a hat, right?
Also thinking - mittens, leggwarmers, purses, etc . All of these knit up fast in worsted weight wool.

Also check out the book "one Skein"- it's full of little projects, both knit and crochet.

Looks like I will be facing my blanket knitting fear witha log cabin squares blanket. I have a bunch of Peace Fleece, and there was so much inspiration on Ravelry, so mnany beautiful Log Cabins, I just can't resist. Especially after our last RV trip....brrrrrr, chilly! We need a warm blankie!

what about a really funky scarf, like lots of different yarns, needle sizes and stitches.

If it were me? I'd do a "patchwork" granny square blanket. I love crocheting granny square blankets, because up until the point where you piece the granny squares together, your work is small and so it's very portable.

Random coloured granny square blankets have a certain.... classic look to them, and remind me of an old quilt. Like a quilt, you can play with square arrangements before you piece it together to get good colour balance. Also, granny squares are simple, forgiving and a nice intro to crocheting.

Coziness!

Here's a pic of the kind of granny square blanket I was thinking.....
(don't know this person, just found it via google)

Log cabin knitting is really fun! I'm working on a L.C. blanket with all my odd and partial balls of worsted. I'm doing one big square instead of a series of squares. I personally love mindless garter stitch, so I'm really enjoying this knit. Picking out colors is at least half the fun. I'd love to do one in Peace Fleece next!

Enjoy!

I would totally knit up a sweet log cabin blanket, and donate it to charity, if you're not into wool blankets.
