less than 1cm @39 weeks?

The OB did a cervix check and said that I was not even one cm dialated and I am 39 weeks today.

It is my first baby. Is this normal? It seems like everyone I talk to is at least 3 cm by this point. Does this mean labor is probably still a long ways off for me?

It means nothing. People can walk around dilated to 3cm for weeks and you could go tomorrow. Cervical checks don't tell you anything about when you will go into labor. Hang in there and trust your body mama your baby will come when it's ready

FWIW I don't get cervical checks at all during pregnancy just for the reasons I stated.

DDC crashing...

I was 1cm dialated at 10am on Thursday. DD was born at 4:30 Friday morning. At 40 +5 weeks.

Try not to worry

Don't worry, I walked around 6cm dilated with DD2 for weeks (and with DD1, but I was induced with her), went into labor at 41 weeks exactly. Dilation doesn't tell you anything.

For your first baby? Totally normal.

Yup, I was a "fingertip" with both my dc until I went into labor. Now, I am not getting checked until labor...it tells me nothing.

Doesn't mean a thing...I was dilated 1 cm at 28 weeks....they thought I would PTL for sure...I am 39+ now with baby #4, and been walking around 4 cm for a week and a half. Its not unusual to dialate early in subsequent pregnancies, but since this is your first you are about right for where you are at...I was 1 cm at 39 weeks with my first and went into labor on my due date.

i'm not in your ddc, but i had to respond to this! I am a lady that doesn't dialate before active labor. I will be a fingertip dialated until the day i go into labor....this is true with all my pregnancies (i am on my 4th) i do not allow cervical checks anymore during pregnancy for this reason, there is no sense to do it if i am only going to hear what i already know "you're only a fingertip to 1cm dialated..." ...."well duh, i'm not in labor right now." it's just disheartening.

somewhere i also heard that first time mommy's efface first, and then dialate. whereas second timers+ dialate first, then efface...? (someone correct me if i'm wrong)...anyway so that is something too...if you are pretty effaced already then you're already doing good! be encouraged!

This is my first baby and I haven't had a check yet because of what you're posting. I was afraid to be disappointed by the number! The midwife mentioned checking me next week at 40 weeks but I really don't want to so I'll probably decline until at least 41 weeks when they want to talk induction.

As everyone's already said, it dioesn't mean anything. My 39 wk appt with dd1 was the first time I was dilated, and it was only 1cm. I had dd1 4 days later.

I was at 3cm last week (my 38th week)...but my sister tells me that she didn't dilate AT ALL with any of her 3 children before she went to the hospital in labor. I was a 1cm 3 weeks ago...so it doesn't seem to mean much.
