Non-Vax Friendly Peds in Los Angeles

Hi,
Does anyone know of any pediatricians that are non-vaccine or delayed vaccine friendly in Los Angeles. So far, I have only talked with pediatriancs who refuse to see me unless I follow their vaccine schedules. Thanks so much.

Dr. FLeiss's practice in Los Feliz. Dr. Gordon (and maybe others in his office?) in Santa Monica.

Where are you located?

I always hear folks say that Dr. William Sears is in LA, but turns out it is Capistrano Beach. Maybe that is close to you? His son Robert just wrote a book about vaccines. Maybe they can refer you to someone specifically in LA?

Our family physician takes Medi-cal and seems very cool on the vaccine issue. When we brought our baby in for his 2-week checkup (first time she saw him, as he was born in a different hospital than the one she's connected to... picked my OB before we picked a new doc), she asked, "So what do you want to do about vaccines?" and I said we weren't going to do any before six months, and she nodded and made a note on the chart. She's not in the least concerned that we don't have any plans to do Prevnar, and agrees with us that Hep B is pointless for babies. Our son is 8 months old, just had another checkup (his second... the front office kinda sucks about scheduling :-/), and still hasn't had any shots. She said, "So do you want to follow the Sears delayed schedule then?" which apparently is a single-shot at a time slower schedule, and she's got it pinned up in her office for the parents who want to use it.

Her name is Dr. Marina Khubesrian, and she's affiliated with Glendale Adventist Hospital. Her office is on Chevy Chase in Glendale. It's a teaching practice, too, so there are residents who are sometimes following the doctors around, or even take appointments in their own right. We had a bad experience seeing one of them for a UTI in our older son, but I brought it to the attention of his supervising physician and she understood the problem right away and was appropriately concerned.

Oh that is great!

Im deep in the west valley, so Glendale is out of my reach (traffic is a monster).

Im pleased to see that more docs are open minded though~

good for you sup

Well, I'd suggest looking for family physicians rather than peds. They tend to be more holistic in their approach, it seems.

Don't know if he is taking new patients: Dr. Jay Gordon. If not, maybe they can recommend another doc.

We wanted to go with Dr. Gordon also, but I don't think he accepts insurance which is a bit of a bummer. I think he also charges a required monthly fee to be able to use his emergency contact number. I might be wrong about that - let me know if I am.

We use Dr. Stacey Waneka in Pacific Palisades. She will let you set your own schedule, but not without a brief lecture. I'm not sure if she takes medi-cal.
We chose her because she would take no-vax or delayed vax. But, since I've been going there, I've noticed a few things that I'm not crazy about. (For example, she recently recommended that I put my 2 month old on a feeding schedule as opposed to feeding on demand because she is in the 80th percentile for weight.) But, for us right now - it's more important that we are able to follow our own vax schedule so we are sticking with her. But, we are thinking about trying to find another doc. So thanks for the post!

Good luck!

We used to see Dr Donna Cashden in Sherman Oaks. The practice is called Sherman Oaks family medicine. She is a DO though not an MD. She is very sweet and takes a lot of time with each patient. She accepts insurance, but I don't know about Medical. She personally believes in vax, but she has been open to our family not vaxing and other non vaxing families I know also are patients of hers. If we hadn't moved up to Nor cal we'd still see her.

I have friends who see Dr. Beasley on the Westside, though I don't have personal experience. We see Dr. James Henry at Glendale Pediatrics and I LOOOOOOVE him :, but you say Glendale is out of your way.

YIKES! My LO was always 98th P and my ped is always remarking (in a favorable way) that he is the biggest bf baby she has ever seen. And never wiggles her eyes when I say that he is still nursing... On the other hand she did suggest CIO when my husband brought it up. =(

Personally, I feel strongly about vaccinating so I never even asked my ped her opinion. Of course, I hardly ever her opinion about anything so I don't think she was surprised. On the other hand, she doesn't try and parent my kid which I appreciate.

Dr. Gordon does have a monthly fee for new patients (I think around $250 per month ). He says it's so that he can spend more time with his patients. He's making each visit an hour long, standard. He wants to be able to know each kid and actually remember who they are when and if they call. I believe it since he's a good-hearted ped, but I'm sure this is also a way for him to cut his practice without cutting his paycheck. I love the guy though.

Up in Santa Clarita I use Dr. Sherman at lakeside medical on Lyons. We are on a delayed/selective vax schedule and he seems fine with that. He has never even asked me why I want to skip certain vaxes. he is required by his medical group to have me sign off on the ones I skip though. But it's not like it's a big deal he just hands me the form.

He co-slept with both his kids (now grown) and has no issues with me sleeping with mine. He has never questions CLW, and says it's okay of my son, now 5, won't drink cows milk. There are plenty of other ways for him to get his calcium. He also has a chart in his office of the local water companies, and decided based on the amount of fluoride going into a persons home what kind of baby/kid vitamins he recommends. For me he recommends the kind without fluoride because my local water company adds it to the water.

I like him.

I like Dr. Feder, she is a MD, but uses Homeopathy and other natural medicine.

I used to live in West Hills and drove to Dr. Fleiss. It was worth it.

We saw Dr. Feder a few times and decided to switch. She wrote a nice book which we bought but her demeanor is sort of chilly:.
For her being into homeopathy, we expected someone who would be a bit more friendly and a good listener.
The first time we met with her was when we were still pregnant and were interviewing docs.
We were paying her for an interview meeting and I asked her what her stand was on vaxing and time frame.
She would not answer me!: She instead told us if we wanted to know her views, we could go to hear her speak at a vaccine workshop at Golden Bridge.
I take yoga there and sure its a good thing to know she does workshops. BUT when someone is paying for a private appt. and is sitting in front of a doc and asks a specific question, it should be answered.
I later at home looked up her workshop and saw it cost $60 to attend.
We bought her book and ended up buying some of her remedies too.
The 2nd time we went in with our son after he was born, she didn't remember having met us before even though it was only about a month later.
In the 2nd appt., she was sort of rushed and didn't really let the NP (who is from a childcare background whereas she is not) take charge which we would have welcomed since it was her specialty and she was quite friendly.
Dr. Feder then asked us again!! if we would like info on her upcoming vax workshop at Golden Bridge(apparently she does these quite often). I wanted to tell her she already pimped it to us on the last visit that she didn't even remember us having.
Anyway, I was disappointed b/c we really wanted to like her a whole bunch but she didn't work out for us. I didn't care for all of the self-promotion.
We ended up with a ped. we love who is through UCLA- Dr. Heidi Woo.
They do require vaxing at their office which we didn't know when we first went in but we like her manner and warmth and professionalism so are staying with her.
Our son had a goopy yellow eye at 2 1/2 wks. and she was so caring, she even took time to call us at home later to check on him and called the following morning to say we could bring him back anytime that day if his eye was not better (it was). She isn't into over medicating and is a big supporter of breast feeding and so far, so good.
We decided as long as the vax goes well (so far he has had his 2 month shots) that is ok b/c we plan to travel with him this coming year to Asia which would require shots anyhow.
Sorry this is such a book!

Ironica, thnx for the rec in Glendale. That is very close for us so if we ever need another doc, we will look her up!

dr jenna roberts in santa monica. she is so easy to talk to, great with our child, and respects your decisions as a parent even if they differ from her position. she doesn't lecture ever - truly a wonder in this day and age. we really like her a lot.

Dr. Pamela Middleton is anti-vaccines. She has a location in Newport Beach and in Long Beach. She is my daughter's pediatrician Highly recommended.
