HPV Story on NPR (9-18-08)

Just the standard "Why are parents not going along with the recommended schedule for HPV."

One DOCTOR is quoted as telling her ped that she would rather wait until her daughter is 12 to get the vaccine, and her ped tells her, "No way, she's getting the vaccine!" If my ped ever responds to a well-researched query, "No way, we're doing X," that's the last time I'll be going to that practice.

Ugh. This seems to me like one of the vaxes most clearly linked with bad effects, the benefits are negligible, you still have the get pap smears, anyway.... At least it's an easy decision.

The Merck Company Foundation is an NPR sponsor, and usually the reporters are good about disclosing such conflicts of interest . . . at least on All Things Considered. Such a pity they left out that piece of info for this story.

Didn't it blow you away to hear about all of those RNs, (wasn't it over half of them? I can't play the story right now w/o waking up DD!) who were refusing the vaccine for their daughters?

The next time NPR is holding a pledge drive and I'm tempted to write a check, please remind me of this story (and others like it).
