Top 3 Favorite Foreign Films?

I have to watch 3 foreign (to the U.S.) films for a college class. I am looking at my netflix, but I don't know which ones to pick. I have seen several already, and I don't know if I should watch something new, or stick to what I have already seen.

So, what are YOUR top 3 favorite foreign films??

1. The Lives of Others (German)

2. Maria Full of Grace (Colombian)

3. Seven Samurai (Japan)

2. Bread and Tulips ( Pane e Tulipani)

3. Eat, Drink, Man, Woman

Wow, that's tough to narrow down!

I really love:

Seven Samurai (of course!)
The Bicycle Thief
Tampopo
Spirit of the Beehive
Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown
The Devil's Backbone (disturbing subject matter alert)
Sholay (Hindi version of a Spaghetti Western -- if you're intersted in Indian movies at all I can recommend a ton more)
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly or Once Upon a Time in the West or For a Fistful of Dollars
The Conformist
Kung Fu Hustle
A Chinese Ghost Story (utterly wacky and tons of fun)
The Garden of the Finzi Continis (it's slow, though -- be prepared going in)
The Gerard Depardieu version of Cyrano de Bergerac
La Dolce Vita
The Cocteau version of Beauty and the Beast
The Fourth Man (utterly bizarre)
Delicatessen (also utterly bizarre, but oddly sweet for a movie with so much cannibalism)
Diva
Full Moon in Paris
Shall We Dance (the Japanese original, not the American remake)

OK, that's way more than three, and I could keep going but I'll try to restrain myself. My list is a little heavier on weird movies than others because I like that sort of thing, but there are also some comedies and romances on there.

Okay, if we get to cheat and post extras I'll add another one.

I thought the American version ( The Grudge) was scary, but Ju-on ( the original Japanese movie) was SCARIER!

Maria Full of Grace and La Dolce Vita were too depressing for me...

Oh, Pan's Labryinth was good.

I don't watch very many foreign films.

tinybutterfly, Black Sunday is one of my absolute favorite movies! I didn't put it on my list because I figured what with Chinese Ghost Story and Devil's Backbone I had the freaky supernatural stuff covered, but that is such a good, good, creepy, beautiful film.

I pulled it off! Guess I should put it back on.

I thought it might be too hokey.

It really did scare the snot out of me when I was a kid. I watched it again this summer with my brother and ds#2...ds#2 thought it was hokey. I thought it would stop the nightmares about vampires living in my closet if I saw it as an adult. No such luck. :

Thalia the Muse, you watch a lot of foreign films...are you, were you a film student or do you just have eclectic taste like my brother?

I just like movies! I wrote reviews for a magazine for a while, so I watched a lot of classics so I'd know what I was talking about, but mostly I just enjoy seeing something unusual and good.

There aren't that many recent movies on my list because I don't see as many as I used to.

Monsoon Wedding
Eat Drink Man Woman
House of Flying Daggers

wings of desire
the unbearable lightness of being

Ma Vie en Rose
Raise the Red Lantern
French Twist

Il Postino
Life is Beautiful

I loved Love+Hate. It was kind of an Indie flick, and I *love* those. Some of the most insightful, moving films I have seen are Indie flicks. This one in particular was seen at the UK film festival I believe.

Well, hopefully you will get to catch up someday! And what a way, coo, fun job you used to have! I'm jealous!

I think I will get a piece of paper and make a list...there are lots of movies everyone is listing here.

Keep em coming! My netflix queue is getting longer as we write

I've seen many of these films already, but def not all of them (yet!)

ETA: Oh, My assignment is to evaluate the cultural differences, so it has to be semi-modern and non-fantasy.

I think these have been covered but I love:

Ma Vie en Rose
Amelie
Il Postino
Pan's Labryinth

It can be ANY film as long as it's foreign? Do they have to have anything in common? Just trying to narrow the field here a bit cuz, like Thalia, I have seen and like to watch a LOT of foreign films.

I have to say that my fave foreign films are Asian so my interest leans towards films in Japanese or Chinese, etc.

Is your paper going to be about pacing or filming techniques or what?
