The Pillow Book starring Ewan McGreggor, kind of a crazy romeo and juliet type story, modern day setting, amazing caligraphy and images.

Resurrecting this thread because I watched City of God and City of Lost Children last night.

I thought City of God was good and liked the flashbacks/back stories. It was a touch hard to keep everyone straight (at first). I kept on forgetting the actual movie was about Rocket's story (yet not really about Rocket himself). It was fairly predictable too, but what are you gonna do, it's based on a true story so they had to follow the truth of it.

I thought City of Lost Children was great! I've seen comparisons to Pan's Labyrinth but I think CoLC is a much better film. So imaginative and crazy (in a good way). Really enjoyable film, fun to watch. A bit mesmerizing at times too.

Although, I do have to say that Tsotsi is still my fav. foreign film.

Miyazaki's Grave of the Fireflies: Hands down his best work (his other works are good), but this film is the only film that has ever made my husband cry. It's devastating, but beautifully told.

Roshomon: Love this movie, probably my favorite Kurosawa film...let's face it anything Toshiro Mifune is in rocks...he's THE MAN!

Indochine: Was there ever a more beautiful man than Jean Baptiste? I mean, I would have run away from home to search the country for him...my god, he's a beautiful man. Catherine Deneuve...how beautiful is she

I love him too! I really got into samurai b and w films for a while and my absolute favorite is Samurai Rebellion with Mifune. You might bawl your eyes out but it is so beautiful.

Just some of the best from the last year or so:
Slumdog Millionaire (does it count? sorta foreign)
Tell No One
Boy in the Striped Pajamas

Worst: Let the Right One In-beautifully done, seriously wrong, very wrong because it's not aware it's wrong. Disturbing; wish I could rinse it from my mind.
