Depends on where you live.
I'm in zone 5 in the pacific northwest - a hop, skip and jump from the Canadian border.
We're just barely getting apples to ripen - the whole growing year/season's been wonky and 3 weeks behind. But the apples in our neighborhood? You pick them from the trees after the first light frost - which could be tomorrow, could be October 31st (more than likely in a few weeks or so). The ones dropped from trees we pick up and use for cider, and sometimes for applesauce if they're not too bruised and no critters have gotten to 'em.
ETA: My organic orchard hookup from the farmer's market sells seconds in 40lb boxes for $20 - and their seconds actually are better than anything I've ever bought at our local grocery stores (and the local store actually has okay to good produce). A shoulder crack or small bruise or brown scab on the skin don't phase me or the kids one bit - either we eat it or just cut that little portion out. Too much fun around here come apple time.
