So many babies have been born in the caul!

Wow - I counted four in the birth announcement thread... What lovely physiologic births we must be having in this ddc!

More babies are born in the caul when vaginal exams are less common. Which with homebirths, most women don't get vaginal exams during pregnancy.

I've noticed that with our DDC. I never knew that janasmama. I've been hoping for a baby born in the caul, but I just want a baby now, caul or no!

Were any of you mamas with the baby born n the caul taking the Vit. E/Vit. C regimen? It would be interesting to see if there's a correlation!

Been lurking for ~4 months. My baby was born early yesterday morning (at 39+3 weeks) in the caul. It was great! Might post on the birth stories thread later.

Congratulations mama!! Definitely post a birth story!

I was just commenting to DH last night about how many babies in our DDC have been born in the caul. I think it is so awesome, I am sorta hoping this little one will be.

I did not take any extra vitamins. Had no cervical checks during labor, however i did check myself in early labor and felt the baby's head. But i didnt force anything around.

I'm not from your ddc, but curious. So, I'm not sure what "born in the caul" means, but I've deduced it is baby born with amniotic sac still intact? Is this correct? That would be so cool! Does it make the labor and delivery a little less "intense", if you KWIM?

I did not take any vitamins at all...

With my first my medwife broke my water when I was 8cm (i have no idea why). With my second I had one vaginal check at 9 cm (none during the last weeks of pregnancy) and my water broke 2 pushes before baby was born. And with this one i did not have any vaginal checks.

seemingly having a baby born in the caul happens less than 1 in 1000 births. We sure are far surpassing that statistic.

I was born in the caul. For that reason, I specifically told my birth attendants last time that I did not want anyone attempting to break my water. It did break, though, at the beginning of crowning. I didn't realize it at the time because I was in water, but she came out with no sac on her. Later I was like... "oh yeah, I think I remember something feeling like a little pop." It felt like a joint popping somewhere where there was no joint but then I had a big contraction and was too focused on the pushing sensations to think about it.

I'm hoping this one comes out in the caul... after all, I was my mom's second baby!

In my labor, while i was pushing i reached down and felt the bag of waters bulging and it was such intense pain. I wanted the midwife to break the bag of water but she encouraged me to keep pushing. I was in water and reached down and felt the bag bulging out of me and it was very slimy. I had a 10+2 pound baby w/ a 15cm head circumfrance. I did not even have a first degree tear. I did not need stitches either. I truely feel that the bag, being in tact help my bottom stretch naturally to allow my baby to come out with little tearing. Once the baby's head was out the pressure and pain was much less intense. I feel that it was probably more intense, but that is my opinion. Birthing hta baby in warm water also helped with the intenses of it all. I've so got to get my birth story together. I cant wait to get it out on paper or online.

I didn't know anything about it, and I vaguely remember my midwife saying how cool it was while we were in the tub. After we were out of the tub and in bed, my doula was telling me how special it was and that I needed to look it up later. It really is a cool thing.

I did take extra vitamins. I was taking an herbal protocol for about 6 or so weeks to keep my immune system up and make sure I tested GBS negative. I took Vitamin C, echinacea, garlic, probiotics, and GSE. I also started an alfalfa supplement about 2 weeks before delivery.

I did have 2 cervical checks during labor though.

Paikea was sorta halfway born in the caul. My water had a small leak that started labor, but it was still almost full because it was such a small leak. Her head came out still in the sac, but my hubby broke it and pushed it over her head. She probably would've come out in it had he not done that (I have rather tough membranes tbh).

I'm not part of this DDC either, but I was nosy and reading, and you learn something new everyday! This one's interesting!

I don't think it's "intact", because if it were, you'd have to deliver all the amniotic fluid too, and I'm not sure that's possible (unless maybe the bag was VERY stretchy and it was squished to fit, then maybe).

But in my Googling on the subject; I found this blog entry that speaks of a woman's child being 'born in the caul' - complete with a picture (that I found somewhat creepy and disturbing, but only because it's not what I'm used to seeing, so it doesn't look right to me). I only read a bit of the story leading up to the picture, and a little bit after it.

I'm gonna be thinking about this 'news' all night!
