baby body products

I just realized I have no specific baby products for skin/diaper/washing care.

I'm not a big toiletry product person myself, though I admit to a fetish for nice hair conditioners.

I'll use a little olive oil at first in the diaper area to help ease meconium cleaning. But what else do you recommend having on hand at the beginning?

this website has been helpful for finding out what products are undesirable, and why:

Please tell me what products and brands you have/use/like!

I don't use soap on the kids, except for handwashing. Baby's skin is so delicate and they really don't get all that dirty, so there's no need for it. When they are older (my two are 2 and 4, so now for them) I use a shampoo bar about once a week on their hair, since they tend to get stuff in it. I buy those from Blue House Soaps (www.bluehousesoaps.com), much better than all that commercial crap with the chemicals. I tried California Baby, but it really dried out their scalps.

I like CA Baby and Weleda products. I get the sensitive version of CB, and the calendula Weleda stuff.

Thanks for the great link! I have a bunch of California Baby stuff for the coming babe. Don't know what will work and what will not, and what I will like, but I have the stuff on hand. I was sad to read that they have a '1' hazard rating (would have liked to see a '0') so I'll make a mental not to look for other products at the coop next time around.

As far as diaper washing is concerned (I just realized you asked about that too), I have yet to find the perfect detergent. I think I will try 7th Generation delicate, if you go to pinstripesandpolkadots.com, they have a great list of detergents all with ratings on how good they are for diaper washing. That one is rated very good.

Right now, we use Charlie's to wash DS diapers. We were using Allen's naturally before. I haven't seen much of a difference.

I really like the Weleda products. The sample pack was plenty for the first year with us, since I don't wash my baby often and she didn't get diaper rash. The baby cream in the orange tube was really great to put on DD1's cheeks when she had baby acne. Cleared it right up! I think the canendula is really gentle and soothing.

Water, water, water. That's all I've ever really used on my guys, and their hair and skin has always been fantastic. I did use olive oil for the first couple of days for the meconium, but that was it! I figure they get enough chemical exposure in their lives without my help!! My eldest son is almost 10 and just started using shampoo, because he likes the smell of it. I like to think that at least it was 10 years without products on his body, and maybe that will help out in the end! It seems like they're always finding out that something that supposedly was "ok" for us is really bad for us, but I figure water should be somewhat safe!

Mostly just water, but I really like the Weleda stuff if I needed a little something more.
