Broom for Pet Hair??

I have hardwood floors, and two large-breed dogs. I am continuously drowning in dog hair.

My current broom sucks. It is just a plain old broom from the discount store. I find that the hair sticks to the bristles. It ends up just spreading hair all over the place, and I have to pull clumps of hair from the broom about ten times each time I sweep.

I currently sweep at least every other day, but as soon as my babe becomes mobile I am probably going to be sweeping several times a day. I need a new broom!!

Are there any brands that are good for pet hair??

I hear your pain - I also have two dogs and one of them is double coated and insulates our house all year round!

Honestly the best thing I've found is one of those skinny stick-vacs. I found that the hair floats around when I sweep, while the vac can actually suck it up.

Other than that, I also have a microfibre mop that you can use either dry or wet. It's a similar idea to a swiffer but with cloth. The only thing is I don't really like having to rinse it out with my hands cause it's messy.

We have 3 cats and between them and my long hair, I don't know who sheds more.....The best thing that I have found for hard wood floors is using my swiffer but I refuse to spend a fortune on the refills....I have a few older wash cloths that I use instead. They pick up a lot better than swiffer's cloths and all I have to do is take it outside and shake it out and throw it in the wash with the other dirty towels.....

I always thought that these were a gimmick... until I tried one. They are awesome. Bed Bath and Beyond probably has them, I just linked to that site for the photo.

Any sort of dust mop would do a better job than a standard broom when combating pet hair. I'm with the pp... between me and the cats it's a toss-up who's shedding more.

Vermont Country Store has a reusable "swiffer" type mop, and also a wool dust mop that I've been eyeing for a while.

I vacuum. I use the broom for the area around the litter box, but I vacuum up all the furballs floating around the hardwood.

I personally find vacuuming much more effective. But I have also found that spraying a regular broom with endust before I sweep makes the hair stick to the broom & not fly around so much. Just make sure it is endust & not furniture polish - that'll make the floors slippery.

I came across this listing today and thought of you. It seems to be a microfibre sweeper that you can put on your swiffer mop, so you can avoid using the disposable cloths.

Yes. I have dogs and my last house was ALL wood floors. Now I have a combo of wood, tile, and carpet. I use a Dyson for the carpets. A stick vaccuum (tiny one) for the tiles and wood (for crumbs big stuff). But for hair on wood and tile BY FAR the best solution is microfiber towels. Get your self a 12 pack from Target or Walmart in the automotive section for real cheap. Then use a Swiffer broom with the rubbery botton and the holes on top to press the towel into. OR just wrap up some other wide broome with the mf towel and hold it on with hair ties.

We have hard floors everywhere except our bedrooms and two labs, black and yellow. I absolutely love my Eureka cordless quickup for hair! I bought mine at target for $40 and have had it two years and it still works great. Now that my dd is mobile I try to use it every night after she goes to bed. I sweep with a regular broom and vacuum with the big vac once a week just to get the big stuff. You can use it with the bristles on or off too which is nice. And it even works pretty well on the rug I have in the living room and the handle comes off so it it easier to use on the stairs. Hope this helps!

I have a swiffer type broom that has washable pads. I have found it works wonders on the animal hair but not so great on chunks o stuff left behind by the children. We have scunci brand. I picked it up new at goodwill. I think it is worth it for pet hair but I have to go over again to get the other "stuff".

Thanks ladies! I am going to have to try out these suggestions. I have a Swiffer, and an O-Mop from Method but just found they push the hair around. I am sure if I had less hair it would all stick, but we are talking mountains here.

I think I am going to try the microfiber cloths on the Swiffer while I hunt around for one of those rubber brooms. We don't have Bed Bath and Beyond (I am in Canada) but maybe Linens & Things will have it.

We also have a central vac that I have never used (we have lived in our house for a year). It might be worth trying it out.

I just wanted to chime in and say that while expensive, the furminator was a fantastic tool for us. We had a double-coated pup and it was really difficult to deal with the hair at times, especially due to the color and the line of work my DP is in.

At any rate, the furminator worked miracles. We use it on our non-double coated pup now and it's still fantastic. It was worth the money because I am vac'ing less (saving time and electric) and spending less on tape for removing hair from clothes.

Oh I forgot about the furminator! My husband had to have one after he saw a K9 officer use it on a shepherd. We have been using it for about 2months and there is much less hair. Today when I swept I only had enough hair to make another small dog instead of a large one ! We just bought the small one instead of the large one for our two labs. The large one is too wide anyway.

an old converse tennis shoe works good on the carpet ... kinda like the rubber broom idea, just have to get down and do it by hand... maybe attach one to an old broom handle somehow ?????
