Stencil Shelf for DD-stars & fairies?

We are working on DD's "new" room as we get ready for baby no. 2.

My first project in the room is to paint the underside of a shelf that we are placing along the wall where her bed will go (for her stuffed animals). I thought that instead of a plain-old wall-colored shelf, albeit pretty, I could paint the underside of it a nighttime scene with moon, stars and maybe some fairies?

I'd like to use a stencil or even a downloadable template for a consistent "look"...any ideas? BTW, the shelf is about 6'long and 1'deep, curved.

Also, DH will prime the wood first and then I'll paint over that. Any suggestions for the paint type for the stenciling work? Tempura? I've never done this before but I am artistic and confident it will turn out great--just need some tips and the right tools!

Thanks!

What a great idea!

If I were doing that project I would make a star out of cardboard(or anything a little thicker than regular paper)and trace a bunch of them onto freezer paper or contact paper.Cut the shapes out of the sticky paper with an x-acto and stick it to the board.I would use acrylic paint because I have it and am very familiar with it.I think tempra would work.

Sounds like a great project.I would love to see it when you finish if you feel like sharing!
