What is your plan after the baby comes- will you stay home? In Canada we get a year of mat leave. I work for the government as a term right now so I would only get EI of 445$ a week for the first year. But if my boss makes me permanent I get 97% of my current salary for a year. There is a huge possiblity that he will make me permanent. Imight stay home for the first 10 months and DH might for 2 months.

What is the biggest project (if any) you want to finish before the baby comes? Nothing really. We just bought a house in June and the person had redone all of it. I am not very good a decorating or making things look good.

Sometimes I really wish I'd been born in Canada! :

...we get nothing. If we haven't been at our job a year, we don't even get that back (at least they're not required to hold it). If you do qualify for family leave act, you only get three months before they can give your job away. What kind of ass-backwards country are we living in? :

Kate - I won't start to tell you how much money your DH would make as in teacher in my city. And I also won't tell you the current temperature.

I wish everyone could move to Canada because I would not want to worry about a lot of things that you have to in the States.

Are you having any cravings or aversions? Kraft Dinner that is about the only thing I have been wanting that we normally don't eat. [/QUOTE]

Is Kraft Dinner the same as Kraft Macaroni and Cheese in the U.S.? They mention it in a Bare Naked Ladies song and I've always wondered. Obviously, I wonder about very important things.

Do you think you'll go to a birth class with your dh? It might help him feel prepared for being at the birth. Though I hear what he's saying about it being a recent thing for men to be present at births. It was definitely the women's realm in many cultures for ages.

Do you want your dh to be there for the birth?

Do you have any names picked out? :

you know, when our current president was elected the first time, I threw up my hands and announced I was moving to Canada. But I never did. And then I fell in love with a guy who ended up getting sucked into the military (long story for some other time). So here we are, still in the US. Moving to BC is still one of our dreams... Canada just seems to work better on many fronts.

Do you want your DH to be there for the birth? I do. He is really cailming and I share so much with him I don't think I would want to share this with anyone else.

Do you have any names picked out? Yes!

Girl: Winifred or Mae

Boy: Douglas

kai28 - I haven't been to BC yet but I really want to go. They have huge trees. And it is probably the best place to live. It is getting to be expensive. The cost of living in Canada varies greatly.

Kate - come on up! Although I would check out the stats on the weather for Yellowknife first.

Wow! I like winter clothing, but not that much! Still, it might be worth it for the paid mat leave!

Average MAX temps for Yellowknife:

We just lived in the US for two years while my husband was in grad school. While there are lots of things that I miss about Oregon, I was so grateful to be back in Canada for the medical (or in my case midwifery) care and the maternity leave

And my question: given the temperature, what is your favourite winter activity?

Yes, Kraft Dinner (aka KD) is the same thing as Kraft Macaroni and Cheese. Funny, I lived in the US and never noticed that it had a different name there. I haven't eaten it in the US, so can't vouch for it being the exact same thing, but the package looks identical on the shelf.

Thanks for clearing that up. That wikipedia page was seriously funny. I never knew about the "poor man's way" to prepare it.
