Virginia Standards of Learning in line with your homeschooling curriculum?

Hi all,

I just received my Virginia standards of learning for K-12. I am currently hmschooling my dd who is 5 and when I saw the KG standards I was shocked at how much they have to know by the end of the year. I have to pull out a lot of my own resources in order to teach her in the core subjects. I am currently using OM and many of the stuff on it doesn't cover what is needed or expected of the student by the end of KG.

What homeschooling program do you use in Va and do you supplement in order to fulfill those standards?

Looking forward to hearing your responses.

Thanks

I use Seton, which is a Catholic program.

I too was floored when I saw the list of requirements. Yikes! Seton covers all those things (and possibly more...they have high expectations) but it is a VERY Catholic program, with Catholicism in every little part - even the phonics and art. So if you're not Catholic, you would have a hard time picking all that stuff out! I wish I could give you some other recommendations. I'm sure they're out there...you might try the Learning At Home forum as well.

I'm in Richmond area and one of the reasons I chose to hs is because of the stupid SOLs. Way too much info. for little kids. I personally wouldn't worry about it too much. Even if you want to send her to public school someday, they review all the sol stuff like CRAZY in each grade. The kids cram it for the tests and then promptly forget it. Just focus on strong math and reading skills.

I do my own hodgepodge of stuff.

Nope - we do not go by the SOLs.

Sometimes learning chronologically works better for some kids in some areas, and that is only one of the things that the SOLs do not allow for. We're eclectic - picking from this or that curriculum as it serves my children. Tammi
