Where Do You Buy Clothes?

I'm not suere where this goes, so I'll try here. Over the years we have been very grateful recipients of all sorts of hand-me-downs. I have also bought clothes at thrift stores and when all else fails, Gymboree for the kids. We are going on vacation in a couple of weeks to a climate much colder than our own and I am discovering I need cool weather clothes for the kids and myself quick.

We went to some thrift stores and found a bit. My problem is mostly with finding things for myself. I tried Target today but I find myself so overwhelmed with the rows and rows of clothes. Well, I did buy some socks. Anyways, where do you buy your (and your kids) clothes from??

Maybe not uber-popular, but I love Old Navy for our entire family.

Get on Old Navy's mailing list (e-mail). They run a lot of great deals, free shipping, etc. A few weeks ago they had a one day sale: adult jeans $12, kids/baby jeans $7.

For myself, I mainly shop at Old Navy. It's the only place I know that has nice clothing for plus size women at a reasonable price. I occasionally buy things for dd there too but I mainly get her stuff @ Target, Walmart, and yard sales/ thrift stores.

I buy a lot from thrift stores, when that fails, I love Hanna for DD and Lands End for me. We also really like places like Marshals and TJ Maxx.

For the kids- Target, Old Navy, Children's Place

Me- Target, Old Navy, sales from mall department stores

No advice on the stores, but I've found that the best solution for being overwhelmed while clothes shopping is to have a plan. If you know exactly what you're looking for you can scan the racks quickly and not get sidetracked. If I go in with a vague plan like "some warmer fall and winter clothes" I inevitably either come out frustrated and empty handed, or I buy a few things which I later regret.

Old Navy, Gap, Target, goodwill and thrift stores are the only places other that the occational church or neighborhood rummage.

Thrift stores and Ross!

For really cold weather clothes, I find Old Navy, etc. aren't warm enough. It costs more, but I buy stuff at camping supply stores like Campmor (http://www.campmor.com/outdoor/gear/Home) and Farmway (http://www.vermontgear.com/index.html) and use it for years and years. And I ask for gift certificates to them as well!

But if you're looking for vacation clothes, you might be best off looking for some stuff at Target, Old Navy, and online and then supplementing from a thrift store in the area you're visiting if you're going to be there a while. I know in late August, the VT consignment shop had long pants and coats etc. whereas my local consignment was still dresses and "fall skirts" and such.

I agree, try shopping in the area you visit. I've done that before. It's not too much of a pain Usually my family camps on vacation and we make a huge grocery run at the beginning as well.

If I'm buying new clothes, I like Childrens Place for the kids. Much cheaper than Gymboree, and better quality than Old Navy. (Old Navy falls apart and gets holes so fast they barely last through one kid, then I feel guilty about handing the stuff down! Their jeans are ok, I guess.) Target is my second choice, then Kohls. I do check out Gap Kids; sometimes they have some reasonable deals, but they tend to be spendier than C.P. Good quality, though.

My problem with Lands End is it is mostly solid colors. I don't know what it is, but everything we buy in a solid color attracts stains like I-don't-know-what. I prefer really busy patterns if at all possible! Stains? I can't find any! If we buy solids, I try to be sure it is either white so I can bleach the heck out of it, or dark, so the stains don't show so much.

When we lived in Omaha, Goodwill was AWESOME. Where we are right now, there are *no* nice thrift stores. They are dingy, depressing, disorganized, and filled with stuff so old and bad that I don't want it for free. We're moving soon and I've heard there are great thrift stores where we're going, so I'm really looking forward to that!

Before DS, when I had a little more expendable income I shoped Target, Kohls, Old Navy, and Express (for tall jeans). Now it's 99.9% thrift stores for me and the family. DH is "big and tall" so we still have to shop Kohls for him sometimes (luckily, my MIL gives him gift cards for his birthday). I've been thrifting so long, that even the clearance prices at Target give me sticker shock . I can't stand to pay more than $3 for anything anymore.

For ds: Old Navy, The Children's Place, Target and Gap

For dh: Old Navy

For me: Old Navy, Aeropostale and when pregnant (like now) Motherhood Maternity and Target

DH is super picky about his clothes so we just stick to Old Navy for him. I can never find something I like that fits me right at thrift stores, so I gave up. And at all the thrift stores I've been to baby clothes tend to be a bit pricey. I'd rather spend a few extra bucks and get some stuff I LOVE and can use for more than one child.

I do 99% of my shopping for me at Marshall's. Including bras, shoes, you name it. And even there I try buy only clearance items. I hate to spend more than 15 dollars on any one item.

Most of DD's clothes are hand me downs or from Costco (they have great deals on Carters). Shoes for her I get at Marshall's or online.

I am in the midwest- so some of our stores are probably just regional. For me I like buckle, younkers, hanna (well- not regional). The kids get jcp, gap and yard sales. Dh gets jcp.

For myself, it's mostly Gap. I am tall, thin and all leg, so I need their extra long jeans. Of course, long legs = long arms, and I tend to find tops that actually have long enough sleeves there as well.

Ds is impossible to shop for-he is tall, thin and all legs too, LOL. Right now he needs sz 7 boys pants for length, but still can wear a 4T waist. So I stick to Gap for him-I usually get good deals there, and it kills me sometimes to pay their prices, but we have tried so many different places and haven't had much luck.

You mentioned you liked Gymboree...have you tried their cheaper line, Crazy 8? you might want to check it out for your LO's. They seem to have great prices and good shipping deals. I can't speak for the quality myself..I have heard their pants are so/so, but that the tee's are very nice.

Good Luck!

Mostly, the Goodwill. Also, goodly bits from the huge, monstrous, amazing, fantastic Salvation Army store. Also, Babyland. And (in the summer) garage sales. I re-sell DS' clothes too - first I save them for the semi-annaul kids sales held locally (spring & fall), then to the expensive used clothing store, then babyland, and finally whats left goes to goodwill... overall I probably make 50% or better back

for me: Old Navy, TJ Maxx (my favorite) JC Penney and Gap sales if I'm shopping in a town where there's one.

DH: Old Navy and Kohl's

DS, 3yrs old: Old Navy, Mini Boden.com, TJ Maxx for cheap Levi's and Polo brand or Polo type shirts, Target and WalMart, although now that he's older and harder on clothes I'm more careful about what I buy.

DD, 8 mos: Hanna Andersson.com, Mini Boden.com, eBay for used Hanna Andersson, Old Navy jeans ($7 sale) and Walmart for pjs and Garanimals.

Shoes for everyone at Famous Footwear.

I live in a very small town and our thrift store is overpriced and everything is very worn out or oudated or else I'd love to shop there.

We shop at Eddie Bauer and second hand (mostly for DD.)
