Corn Allergy

Thread Starter
So after a HORRIBLE behavior reaction today from drinking lemonade with corn syrup AND food dye (thanks DH ) we completely eliminating corn from the diet. We've been HFCS free for the most part over the past 6 months, but today was such a HORRIBLE reaction that I can't continue to give him food with corn in it... not if there's a risk of repeating today again.

He was out of control... spinning in circles, banging his head against the wall, being aggressive towards everyone... inappropriately giddy and emotionally-charged. I have NEVER seen him this bad. I was actually scared he was going to injure himself out of frustration.

Is there a site or a list that will give me a list of things to avoid if we are cutting corn 100% from our diet? Do I need to have him allergy tested even though I'm POSITIVE that corn is the trigger?

Dairy is another trigger, but in moderation it's not so bad... with an "in moderation" allergy should I think about eliminating that as well?

I've been seriously considering Feingold, but the idea of it is overwhelming to me.

Here is a link to changingseason's blog list of corn allergens.
Do you need to have him tested? No but it may identify allergies of which you were unaware.
Should you eliminate "in moderation" allergens? Yes, I believe so. I thought that whey was a no-no for ds1 and that dairy in general was an "in moderation" thing. Turns out after testing that it's his one "true" (IgE) allergy. Boy, did I feel good about that.
Btw, you're not the only one whose dh is clueless. I still don't entirely trust mine to bring food home. Last time I asked him to pick something or other up (can't remember what atm) it had maltodextrin (wheat or corn, usually) in it, with a nice side of lactoglobulin (dairy). :

If it's a behavioral response, then I doubt that traditional allergy testing will pick it up (though he could have others). We avoid corn for DD (among many others). Here's some right off the bat:
vanilla extract (you can make your own or Vanilla from Tahiti is corn-free)
iodized salt (buy sea salt)
confectioners sugar (uses cornstarch so it doesn't clump; Miss Roben's makes one that's corn-free)
marshmallows (allergygrocer.com)
a lot of deli meats (like all Boar's Head deli meat has dextrose in it; Thumann's brand doesn't have gluten, dairy, soy, or corn in it)
liquid Tylenol, Benadryl, Motrin
There's a zillion others, but those are just some that people don't think of right away.

If it's an "in moderation" thing, I would eliminate it because then it takes longer for the gut to heal, in my opinion. And also begin gut healing measures (CLO, bone broth, probiotics, enzymes).

Also, once the main ones are removed, you may find there are smaller ones that become more pronounced, now that the big ones are out of the way. You may want to keep a food journal so you can track things.
