Soap safe for Lakes?

Okay this question may seem strange - but hear me out! We just went through this whole hurricane IKE thing and for a little over a week we didn't have electricity. We DID have water THIS time, but next time we may not be so lucky. I have made my own vegetable base soaps for the last 2 years or so - but I am curious of safety of using them in our neighborhood lake.
I figure if we dont have water next time we can bathe off in the lake. I would prefer to do it with soap - I know you dont NEED soap but I like to use it - its a psychological thing I guess.
So if my 100% vegetable soap ISN'T safe - is there something that is?

No soap should be used directly in a body of water. You should be taking the water from the lake/river & washing 50-100' away from the shoreline. The soap cannot breakdown in the water. It needs to pass through land to do so.
