My visit with my kids ANP today

It was not a good visit at all.. not only was my son pretty darn near forced retracted but I was also told " You need to march yourself down to the Health Dept to get his shots"

We stopped vaccinating with my youngest with his first Hep B. The others have not had any more shots. We haven't done any shots in almost 2 years.

And of course, during the wellness visit, the question of vaxes came up. Usually I just say they are up to date but things were really crazy (my almost-2 yo was having a melt down) and I wasn't thinking clearly. I mistakenly said, no they aren't when she asked if they were up to date. ugh..

Her argument TO vax was that there are a lot of Chicken plants around the area and there are a large amount of Hispanics, many of which are "illegal" and could bring stuff into the area. : ALL HER WORDS. Not mine. ARE YOU KIDDING!? Wow.. never heard that one on the news.. It's always been the un-vaccinated fault that there are outbreaks, right? :

What on Earth does any of that have to do with vaccines!? Do you know?

I see more Hispanic families at the health dept getting care and vaccinations than clean white families. Seems to me they vaccinate like everyone else? I still can not even believe she said that.

So.. have any good explainations as to why she would use the "chicken plants and Hispanics" as a valid reason to vaccinate?

1) subconscious racism (we Americans are 'cleaner' than 'the immigrants')

2) most people don't know that Mexico actually over-vaccinates by US standards. They're really into vaxing kids at school, regardless of whether or not the kids are already fully vaxed.

I guess it's possible that someone could bring a virus over the border, but my DH works w/ Mexicans and I don't worry about it at all. Viruses and bacteria are everywhere, you need to focus on a good immune system instead of trying to vax for the very few VPD.

Question??? was she implying that Chickens and (illegal) Hispanics spread VPDs or was she saying that a lot of (illegal) hispanics work in chicken plants thus lots of chicken plants = lots of hispanics = lots of illegal immigrants = lots of VPDs?

unclear about disease and vaccines=unclear about risk of disease=unclear about who might be spreading disease=muddled about a whole lot of different things

this doctor doesn't inspire confidence

Only doctors seem to be able to get away with this kind of xenophobia.

just realized that ANP probably is some sort of nurse practioner--also with a license for xenophobia and political incorrectness

lol! Um yeah, exactly.. I'm not sure what she was implying and didn't really feel like prying would exactly make her or I any smarter so I left it alone.
