I took my daughter (8 months) to the pediatrician 2 weeks ago because she had a nasty diaper rash and a couple of yeasty looking spots on her chest and under her arms. She's never had any skin issues before so I wanted to be certain that it wasn't something more severe. It was diagnosed as a yeast infection, presumably from all of the teething related drool so we treated it with Nystatin powder prescribed by the ped. and went about our business.
Then I got the brilliant idea to offer my daughter (full fat, plain) yogurt for the first time. Naturally, she loved it and shoveled it into her mouth as fast as her little fingers could work. Other then the yogurt she didn't have anything but breastmilk while she was rashy.
Her diaper area rash improved almost immediately but the chest/underarms got worse and were starting to become itchy. I stopped letting her play with/eat yogurt (she had it 3 days in a row), continued to avoid any lotions/creams/body wash and continued to nurse her as usual. No changes in my diet or any other areas.
I took her back to the ped. (not our usual doctor) on Friday where she was promptly diagnosed with eczema. She gave us some Protopic ointment to put on the itchy spots until they calm down and suggested Eucerin/Aquaphor twice a day. She wants us to schedule a consultation with our pediatrician sometime this week.
Would you assume the eczema outbreak is due to the yogurt? I had planned to wait until she was at least 12 months to give her any dairy - I'm so mad at myself for not thinking about it and just giving her the yogurt!!! I heard "yeast" and had always treated my own YI that way but I hate that I might have caused my little girl some discomfort.
She was still scratching a bit at her chest last night but it's definitely improving. She's sleeping much better and is more herself so I guess that ointment is doing what it's supposed to. Any suggestions on long term care? I'd prefer NOT to do the consultation with the pediatrician if possible.
