Benadryl does for an 11 month old -Hives

My ds is almost 12 months old (in a week) he was weighed yesterday at the ER, he's 20 lbs. He had an ear infection and was given Amoxicillin last week, now he ended up with Hives head to toe and a fever of 103!! We rushed to the ER and they concluded an allergy to Amoxicillin. The Dr. gave us a prescription to Benadryl - 1 tsp every 6 hours. Does that sound right?
I was searching on online and most moms say they only give 1/4 tsp - 1/2 tsp
I don't want to give him too much, but I also don't want ds to suffer!
Also,
How long until the hives go away? Thanks!

I'd go with the prescribed dose. They do it depending on the severity of the reaction. If you look at a regular dose it will say 1-2tsp, so it all depends how much you need. You can call your pharmacist if you're not sure.

Call the pharmasist!

I gave 3/4tsp for my then 25lb 18mo. With my 20lb 18mo, I give 1/2tsp. But I got the 3/4tsp from a pharmasist!

My daughter had a similar reaction to Zithromax at 6mo and we didn't give Benadryl and it took about 5 days for all the hives to go away. With Benadryl it should just be a day or two. Good luck!

My ped's website says 3/4 tsp (of 12.5mg/5ml) for 20-40 lbs, that's what we gave my dd when she had hives from skin contact with milk. We saw an allergist yesterday though and the information they gave us says 1 tsp of Benadryl in the event of an allergic reaction, so we'll go with that if the need arises.

When my son was about that size our Dr. prescribed 1 tsp for the first dose and 3/4 tsp for the subsequent doses - this was for accidental ingestion of trace amounts of dairy because his allergy is so severe. More than a trace and we'd likely be using an epi-pen.

When my DS got a script for Benadryl our Ped wrote 1/2t was the dose for him at 15 mos. I agree with the PP who said call the pharmacist.

We've always been told to dose by weight. 1 tsp seems reasonable.
